Visualizer

Posted on September 27, 2008

Dave!Catching up with all the television I missed while on vacation has been tough because I've got loads of work piled up as well. So far, the only "must-see" series for me is Jay Mohr & Paula Marshall in Gary Unmarried. I had -zero- expectations for the show, but watched it anyway because I loved Paula Marshall on Cupid and think Jay Mohr is seriously underrated (I can't think of a single thing he's done that I haven't liked). Imagine my shock in finding out that the show is great... really funny stuff. I also kind of enjoyed Worst Week, but don't know how they are going to keep the premise going week after week. The biggest disappointment so far was Knight Rider which sucked so much ass that I expected my television to implode.

Which would be okay by me because after installing iTunes version 8, I've been spending most of my time being mesmerized by the beautiful new Visualizer they've included. It was formerly an iTunes plugin called "Magnetosphere," but it was so sweet that Apple bought it and made it their new default look. Here's just a small sampling of the jaw-dropping images that spring to life...

Of course, static images do nothing to show how incredible the visualizer looks when in motion, but you can at least get an idea of what's going on. Check it out for yourself by downloading iTunes 8 for free!

UPDATE: Here's a video of the old Magnetosphere plug-in in action, which I found in a nifty LifeHacker article with undocumented keyboard shortcuts for the new iTunes Visualizer...

Super sweet.

Those screen captures are very space-like. I love space.

PS - You are 15% cockier after your return from Hawaii! :D

I couldn't agree more in regards to Knight Rider. Total suckage!

I'm having so many problems installing the new iTunes so I can't see the coolness of Magnetosphere. I guess that's what I get for having Windows Vista...not by choice though.

Are you going to watch Kath and Kim?

I make it a point to watch anything with Selma Blair! :-)

Me too. You should join my "The Sweetest Thing" fan club.

I'm so there.

"The Sweetest Thing" (along with Euro-Trip) are permanently on my iPhone and never erased. Every once in a while you just need a laugh no matter where you are.

Finally! Someone else who appreciates the comedic genius of that movie.

I only watched it because I was hopelessly in love with Selma, but ended up loving it. "The Penis Song" alone is cinema gold!

There are two Jay Mohr bits I've seen that tear me up. One involves Christopher Walken and would he rather have a tail or be able to fly (?). And the other was how men and women prepare for bed differently.

Gary Unmarried was good, which made ma happy.

Knight Rider super sucked. There's too much car transformation going on for my liking.

I was surprised to find that I liked Gary Unmarried as well. Jay Mohr = funny.

That's a pretty visualizer, alright! But..did I not read somewhere that your switch to iTunes 8 was semi-tragic? Or am I just imagining things again?

I saw a preview of Knight Rider and that was all she wrote right there. Avoided.

That iTunes visualizer is all bloody kinds of awesome.

Not sure if you've discovered these tricks but... try this next time you're playing with magenetosphere

C - autocycle (default)
M - manual mode

+/- increase/decrease intensity
A/S - add/subtract particles by the 100
R - reset
I - track information

I did NOT know about that feature. Thanks, Dave!

Awesome!!!

I remember the rumors from before the release but then with the hardware and Genius, I forgot all about it...

If you like iTunes visualizers you might want to check out Manifesto. It a work in progress but is very reactive to music. I would say that is better than the built in viz, but since they got Magnetosphere that is a much tougher claim to make.
