This is the Story of a Girl Named Lucky

Posted on Monday, August 28th, 2017

Dave! Thanks to things like "blogging" and "social media," I've made friends around the world. I know somebody who lives just about anywhere. In many ways, this is a very cool thing. Especially when it comes to travel, since there's a friendly face I can visit with no matter where I go. But there's also a down-side.

Because when disaster and tragedy strikes, odds are, I know somebody affected by it.

Such is the case with Hurricane Harvey. I have three blogger friends in the Houston area. I have a friend from work just east of there in the Beaumont/PortArthur area. I know other people in East Texas that could ultimately be affected too.

There's few things worse than watching the news and feeling helpless while seeing what's happening to people I care about.

Well, there's one thing.

Destruction from events like Harvey are terrifying and worrisome... and living with disaster looming in an uncertain future is a horrible thing to suffer through... but at least people understand what's happening.

Abandoned animals do not...

All animals know is to be hungry, scared, and confused as incomprehensible things happen to them. This poor girl was left tied to a telephone pole as the floodwaters started to rise.

I hope it was an accident.

I hope the dog was tied temporarily, and some emergency called the owner away temporarily and they couldn't get back.

I hope this is just a cruel twist of fate that has the owners as upset as I am that this could happen.

Because anything less than that makes me about as upset as I am capable of being.

Luckily the photographer, Ruaridh Connellan, has a heart and rescued the puppy from her plight...

I know the majority of people have kindness in their hearts for animals. I know there are a lot of people like me who would risk their lives to save their pets. But I also know there are people who would leave their animals to die if it was inconvenient to do otherwise, and that's pretty hard to take.

You can read the whole story of "Lucky" at the Daily Mail site.

my heart breaks looking at that photo of her tied up. i’m so thankful the photographer was able to do the right thing.
hurricane ivan’s remnants sat on pittsburgh friday, september 17, 2004. when a friend called to tell me they saw my apartment on the news with water up to the front porch, i left work. took me over an hour to make the 15 minute drive. all i could think of were my dogs, home alone with water potentially rising. in my head i knew they were smart enough to get to the second floor where my bedroom was, but who knew if the roof would hold? i don’t think i have ever prayed harder, begging for my boys to be alright. unfortunately i could not pass a five feet deep and rising river where the main street should have been. i begged a fireman to take me in his truck, but he wisely kept telling me i couldn’t get across. as i was unbuttoning my jeans (somehow i thought they might weigh me down when i swam across) my phone rang. my aunt left for my place when i called to ask if i could bring the dogs over with me and spend the night and she somehow managed to get to my home the back way. she managed to get in and grab my dogs, a 50 pound bag of food, and a pair of sweatpants for me. point is, i would have done anything to get to my dogs, even knowing they most likely would have been safe. all i could think about was them being thirsty and their bowls submerged in filthy flood water. it was only when i collapsed on the ground reunited with the boys that i realized i most likely would have drowned trying to get to them. and i was ok with that. i couldn’t have left them. i’m such a sap that i am crying typing this so i will stop now. whew.

I feel the exact same about my cats. I cannot imagine any scenario where I wouldn’t do absolutely anything to try and save them from danger.
