Bygones

Posted on Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

Dave!Thou shalt not avenge , nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. — Leviticus 19:18 (KJV)

Grudges are always more destructive to the person holding them than the person who's a target of them. Which is why it's not terribly smart to hold grudges, and you'll be a lot healthier and happier if you heed Holy Scripture and just let things go. Bygones, and all that.

But "letting go" of those you feel have wronged you is not always an easy thing to do. Thus a grudge by inaction becomes revenge in action.

Humans are hard-wired for revenge, and modern humans have elevated it to an art-form. When we're not seeking revenge, we're enjoying it as entertainment. This is not something we're proud of. Our aspirations are so much higher. But you can't fight human nature.

And by "you" I mean "me."

I expect so much better of you.

  1. That’s right. I can’t fight human nature. Fortunately the story doesn’t end there. I can invite the supernatural to work in me and those aspirations can be satisfied.

    Love to you.

  2. Kyra says:

Does this mean you’re coming after me, and I need to be on the lookout? 🙂

I hold grudges. I do. I don’t get revenge, I never seek to “get even”, but I never forget what is done and I will hold it against them. My memory is just far too sharp. I don’t want to hurt anyone else, but I have a lot of anger when someone hurts or uses me.

  3. Mrs. Hall says:

There is also the adage ‘we forgive because we’ve been forgiven’, which is what God calls us to do–forgive. Holding grudges is a sin.

It’s not easy to let go. If it was easy, we wouldn’t need His help with it.

And I’ve asked His help many MANY times and He has reached in and healed my heart without fail! Protecting me from the bitter that grows from unforgiven.

And really, that is what forgiveness is all about–healing!!

So raise up your hands DAVE!! Let the LOVE HEAL YOU!!!

  4. I tended to hold grudges in a big way when I was younger. Now, I try to let go of them, but I can’t ever forget them.
