Super?

Posted on Monday, December 3rd, 2012

Dave!Holy crap.

Seriously... HOLY CRAP!

The new Man of Steel movie poster has been unleashed on an unsuspecting world, and boy oh boy is it a steaming pile of shit. If this... this... is how the people making this movie see Superman, then we're all fucked. And so is the film...

Man of Steel Shitty Movie Poster

Are you frickin' kidding me?

Look, anybody writing Superman has to wrap their head around one concept and one concept only.

He is a god.

But a god who was raised as a man, so he walks amongst them.

But not really.

Because his powers and abilities are far beyond what any mere mortal can fathom. The problems he has to deal with are on a scale that dwarfs the understanding of any man. Because he's not a man... as much as he aspires to be a man. As much as he tries to pretend he's normal by dressing up as Clark Kent.

So having the movie poster for a Superman film which shows your "Superman" in handcuffs like a regular guy... being dragged down to our level... it's a complete betrayal of everything that makes Superman be Superman. And I don't for the life of me understand what director Zack Snyder is trying to say with it. Superman could bust out of those fucking handcuffs and beat every soldier around him senseless in seconds. Fractions of seconds. So is this symbolic? A way of saying that, despite all his power, Superman is just a man? He's not above the law? Well, barf... who would want to watch that movie?

Superman is not Batman. He's not fighting insanity in the gritty streets of Gotham City.

He is a god.

Who clings to the humanity that his earthling parents instilled in him.

All while being the most powerful being on the planet.

He's about as far removed from the "gritty streets" as you can get. And, yes, he IS above the law.

Superman is above everything.

Except in this movie, apparently. I mean holy crap, Superman was better portrayed in the LEGO Batman video game. This... this... is just pathetic.

I havent looked into this movie much (i try to avoid reading plots and/or spoilers before I see the movie, or at least the trailers), but my only guess is that he did something to piss somebody off or accidentally got somebody killed, and the people demanded his surrender (you know, like Will Smith in Hancock). Other than that, who knows.

  2. LeSombre says:

I read the first two lines of your post on Facebook, and thought that you liked the poster. 🙂 then I continued reading here and realized you actually don’t.

I thought you were going to harp on the cheesy “lens flare” effect. That’s the first thing I noticed – and hated. I don’t mind the handcuffs, because like you I know they won’t do any good if the Man of Steel decides he has enough of that.

I would love to see a Superman poster done by you!

  3. I didn’t like their choice of actor, or the costume, or now the poster. Probably not gonna go see the movie either. Sigh.

  4. the muskrat says:

Maybe they’re made of kryptonite? Maybe he’s using this as an opportunity to get close to a certain villain? Regardless, bad movie poster.

  5. B.E. Earl says:

The suit looks like shit too.

Listen, I’m no fan of the character. Quite the opposite. But true fans deserve better. Maybe this image doesn’t even reflect anything that occurs in the film. Maybe it’s just symbolic, as you say. And is some of the Superman comics I’ve read, he has struggled with the idea of humanity and his place within it. And this duality is something each film has dealt with in one way or another in the past. So yeah…it’s time for something new and better. I couldn’t believe that the best they could come up with in the last film was Lex Luthor using Kryptonite against him. So tired. Not that I’m against someone strapping on a pair of Kryptonite gloves and beating the crap out of him. Nope, that I don’t minde.

    • Dave2 says:

At least we still have the cartoons. The latest Superman release, “All-Star Superman” is a brilliant adaptation of a brilliant story that’s everything a Superman story should be. I’m not a Superman guy… I’m a Batman guy… but I’m a fan of any super-hero character that’s well-written and handled in an interesting way. This doesn’t look like it’s going to be that. I hope I’m proven wrong.

Oh… yes… that suit looks like total shit. But, even worse, where’s Superman’s curl on his forehead? It’s as if Zack Snyder didn’t even WANT to make a Superman film.

  6. sizzle says:

Tell us how you really feel, Dave.

    😉

    xo

  7. kilax says:

I hated the poster when I saw it. But I think I am just sick of all these remakes (How many Supermans in the past 10 years? And Spiderman? Incredible Hulk?)

  8. Mind Of Mine says:

I am currently running a Ticket Give Away for Dick! An Adult Only Pantomine and I was just wondering if it would be something you or your readers might be interested in.

It is being held in Leicester Square Theatre and running until January. Check out my blog post for more information. I am also running a cash give away, for those who cannot attend the show.

  9. Donna says:

It’s Henry Cavill. If the poster has him in it, it’s like, the best poster ever in the history of posters. Seriously. That dude is a god. A smokin’ hot, sexy, hunk o’ burning love and any girl…and a lot of men would be thrilled to have him handcuffed.

Plus superman is honorable. If he was arrested, he wouldn’t break free. He’d want to prove his innocence so it makes sense.

  10. Jim says:

Meh. We have seen Superman stories where he surrenders to “authority” a zillion times. (We comic book readers have, anyway.) That is bound to be what is going on here.

Does it make a good movie poster? It certainly catches the “What’s going on here? How can this have happened to god-amongst-men Superman? I must find out!” goal, but I think everyone with even passing knowledge of Superman is unlikely to believe that this captures the central point of the film, and to that it, the poster is a lie and makes me suspicious rather than intrigued.

  11. claire says:

ARgh! I *hate* the suit. They did that textured BS with the last movie and I hated it then too.

Superman isn’t a dark character! He’s honest and loyal and has a super strong moral sense. He doesn’t slink in the shadows because he’s near invincible. His colors are bright!

I saw Superman: The Movie (with Christopher Reeve) in the theater when I was 5, so yeah, I love Superman. Superman would submit to wearing cuffs if charged for something because he doesn’t think he’s above the law, but why make him look so dingy?

Absolutely hated that they made him basically a deadbeat dad in S Returns. This new poster does not bode well.

The newer cartoon movies are cool at least.

  12. M says:

“Superman could bust out of those fucking handcuffs and beat every soldier around him senseless in seconds. Fractions of seconds.”

But he won’t. He never would. If he’s in cuffs, it’s practically by choice and that speaks to his trying to be less a god and more a citizen of Earth.

I know nothing about the plot of the movie, but this has me interested, much more than Supes standing around looking heroic.

    Yeah, hate the costume, though.

  13. Jason says:

I hear what you’re saying. I also agree with some previous comments about The Man of Steel choosing to be “taken in” to show his not above rules or ethics.

We’ll see how it plays out. I just enjoy the ride. So many iterations of Superman and Spiderman have prevented me from expecting a life changing experience like the original Start Wars or The Matrix.

So let’s see what happens. Thanks for the post and the discussion it started.

    Jason

  14. So… in all my life I never realized something until you made a statement above: “But a god who was raised as a man, so he walks amongst them.” I wonder if in 2000 years, people will be worshiping Superman as the new Jesus?
