Bullet Sunday 277

Posted on Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Dave!Put down that margarita, because Cinco de Mayo is over and Bullet Sunday starts... now...

• Wonder! Now that Joss Whedon's The Avengers has broken box office records and made $600 MILLION DOLLARS in only twelve days of release (with only three of those days here in the USA), my mind wanders to another project he was attached to a while back... Wonder Woman. Except Warner Bros. screwed him out of the film, which he very much wanted to make. Now, I'm not so deluded to believe that a Whedon Wonder Woman film would do The Avengers box office... far from it. But I do think that Joss could have made it successful if he had just been given a chance...

George Pérez Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman perfectly rendered by the incomparable George Pérez

Whedon has a history of writing amazing female characters (Buffy, anyone?) and his take on Black Window in The Avengers was flawless, so one can only fantasize what he would have done with the most popular female comic book super-hero ever.

If every person at Warner Bros. responsible for fucking up Whedon's Wonder Woman film hasn't gotten their ass kicked and been fired, it needs to happen. Stupid shit like this is the reason that DC Comics' only success with movie adaptations in recent years has been Batman.

• Repeat! Speaking of The Avengers, am I the only one who saw it and now all they can think about is seeing it again?

Avengers Agent Coulson Poster

The movie was just so... big... that I know it's going to take at least a dozen viewings before I manage to process everything that happened.

• Beastly! Sadly, Adam "MCA" Yauch died on Friday at the much-too-young-age of 47. Like everybody else from my generation, The Beastie Boys were a pretty big musical force in my life. And, apparently, other musicians feel the same, because the tributes are already rolling in. Like this one form Chris Martin and Coldplay at a recent concert...

This rendition of the Beastie Boys' most famous song is completely contrary to the brash "in your face" intent of the original song, but it's so beautifully crafted and heartfelt that it still works. Rest in peace, MCA.

• Comedy! I didn't necessarily agree with all the winners at the Second Annual Comedy Central Comedy Awards... but what a frickin' hilarious show. If you missed it, keep a look out. Comedy Central usually reruns their crap fifty times a week, so it should be popping up soon.

• Let Us! Why is it whenever I buy a bag of shredded lettuce for tacos and hamburgers that the shit goes bad just one day after opening? Oh... hold a second... the answer is staring me right in the face...

Lettuce Shreds: No Preservatives

So now I'm conflicted. On one hand, I appreciate that my lettuce doesn't have any chemicals on it to make me sick or give it a funky taste. But on the other hand... I'M SICK AND TIRED OF THROWING MONEY IN THE GARBAGE EVERY TIME I BUY A BAG OF LETTUCE! I'd be happy if I could get a bag of salad that would last a full week. Hell, I'd be fucking thrilled to have a bag that last three days. But it doesn't exist, so one of two things needs to happen... 1) Start making multi-packs that divide the bag into smaller servings so unused portions can stay fresh longer. 2) Add the damn preservatives so I can actually afford to have lettuce on my burger. I suppose a third option could be to buy a head of lettuce and chop it down when I need it, but even that doesn't last for shit. Stupid lettuce.

And now... back to my post-Cinco-de-Mayo reality.

  1. HBO was rerunning the Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony this weekend and it was eerie to see MCA accepting his induction. I wondered if he knew he didn’t have much time left and was hiding the fact. Brave and heroic.
Also, try to seal up your lettuce without air, or at least without as much air as possible. Air is the enemy of your food’s freshness. Those “green bags” work too. 🙂

    • Dave2 says:

I tried the green bags and liked them for fruit, but they didn’t make any difference on vegetables for me… everything from lettuce to carrots still rotted away. Maybe I need to hook a vacuum pump up to my refrigerator! 🙂

  2. Avitable says:

I think that Joss on Wonder Woman would be a great movie. I would love to see that, even more than him on another Avengers.

    • Dave2 says:

Ooh… I dunno about that. While I think he is the absolute most perfect guy for Wonder Woman, I loved Avengers so much that I’m dying to see where he’d take it next!

  3. bo says:

Damn. Score another one for Coldplay. I don’t always like what they do, but it always comes from the heart.

  4. Steve in NH says:

Yeah, those shreds are just gonna have more surface area for bacteria to grow. One more thing that languishes in “the rotter”. aka the crisper.

    • Dave2 says:

When I try head lettuce, it doesn’t seem to rot any slower. I’ve tried dozens of settings on my refrigerator after being told that my temp/humidity must be wrong, but any kind of produce doesn’t want to work very well, so I’m thinking I live in a time acceleration vortex!

  5. I got to see The Avengers a second time and it helped me fill in some blanks regarding the Hulk.

    • Dave2 says:

My problem was the action sequences, which were butchered in 3D. I’m hoping a second viewing in 2D will fill in those blanks for me!

  6. Sybil Law says:

LOVE that drawing of Wonder Woman!!
Lettuce really is a pain in the ass. However, I bought some Romaine lettuce like, 2 weeks ago, and the leftovers of it in my fridge are STILL good. It was organic – not sure if that made any difference, but it still amazes me every time I see it. (It might taste awful, though. Not sure.)

    • Dave2 says:

I wish I had more options here for produce, but I really don’t. Because of my proximity to Quincy, famous Qunicy Corn is about all I get. 🙁

  7. Greg says:

The Avengers was a great film. I loved the story, the acting, the special effects, and especially the humor. I hope you stuck around for the tag ending after the credits….

  8. Jim says:

When you can, buy Farmer’s Market lettuce. I was astounded last summer, having two heads of lettuce that each lasted over three weeks in the fridge. (I go through them slowly, what can I say.) And tasty, not to mention you can choose from more than the 4 varieties Safeway says exist in the world.

The secret is undoubtedly moisture levels. Store heads of lettuce are misted/sprayed a lot, and that gets into the bas of the leaves and festers. Farmer’s Market lettuce was largely dry (but not dried out).

Lettuce-in-a-bag, remember that stuff was shredded a week or more before it even got to you. No wonder it goes bad so fast.

    • Dave2 says:

We used to have a local grower that would deliver(!) fresh salad fixin’s once a week. It was pricey, but magic. But that’s gone now, and I can rarely get to the farmer’s market in Wenatchee. It’s kind of a bummer, because the fresh fruit selections here are amazing.

  9. Abigail says:

I have a tip for you! I use the Salad-in-a-Jar method to cut up my lettuce in advance and then vacuum seal it in mason jars. Even if you only filled the mason jar with 1-2 servings of salad it would still stay fresh for at least 2 weeks thanks to the airless chamber!

  10. martymankins says:

Your lettuce rant is spot on. We have that same issue. It looks like Abigail has a great option. We always put the store bag inside a Ziplock bag, because that store bag never keeps it fresh as long. We get a good 8-10 days out of that bag.

RIP MCA. BTW, Blondefabulous mentioned he was at the RnR Hall of Fame induction. He wasn’t… the other two read a letter from Adam.

  11. I have a new found respect for Coldplay after watching that. Very very well done.

  12. Rebecca says:

I heart Wonder Woman – was just her for Halloween. Made my own costume with a little help from Ebay, Joann’s, F21, and American Apparel of all places. Think it turned out pretty well!

Saw Avengers on Friday and definitely plotting my return. If only to see Hulk punch Thor again. ah, the little things.

  13. Invader_Stu says:

I still have to see the Avengers. I want to see it so bad.

  14. Bishopdown says:

Just wanted to agree with you that the adventures movie was great. I’ve already seen it twice!! and you did notice that there will be a sequel!! The Skrulls are comming

  15. Mrs. Hall says:

Mr. Hall buys bags of spinach which seem to last a week or two. My little boy (age five) LOVES it!!

    so maybe try that?

  16. kapgar says:

That Coldplay video is very cool. I think MCA would dig it.
