Trekker

Posted on Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Dave! After all these years, I still can't decide if I am a Star Wars guy or a Star Trek guy.

I guess I love them equally. Though they are very different at their core, the two franchises have followed similar arcs... both starting out with sheer brilliance, then descending into utter crap. Though Star Trek did make a stunning recovery with its 2009 film reboot, which had me leaning to Trek for a while. I don't suppose it's too much to hope that Star Wars will get a similar break? I dunno. There's talk of a television show and wacky rumors of a third trilogy, so one can only hope.

In any event, we've reached the 45th anniversary of Star Trek "The Original Series" which is pretty much the only Trek series that matters to me (as any long-time reader of this blog already knows)...

So happy 45th anniversary to Star Trek and thanks for everything!

Now if only JJ Abrams would get off his ass and give us another amazing movie real soon now.

  1. Nenette says:

I’m in the exact same boat — Star Trek or Star Wars, Star Trek or Star Wars.
Although I have to say that I’m probably leaning more Trek for many reasons, which include the reboot and the fact that they did NOT have a Holiday Special. (Okay, I admit that I do try to watch the Star Wars Holiday Special every year, but frankly, I’ve never been able to get past the opening credits. It’s painful.)

    Happy Anniversary, Star Trek!

ps – I’m still pissed that they replaced the old Anakin with the young Anakin in the last scene of Return of the Jedi. Boo.
pps – I agree that JJ Abrams needs to kick another load of awesome out of that hopper of his. I think the actors are all lined up, and it’s going to happen soon.

  2. Invader_Stu says:

It’s sad but I think we’ll only get a good Star Wars come back once George Lucas is dead.

  3. martymankins says:

Wow. 45 years and you have proof that you are a Trekkie with your Lil Dave toons and playing cards (which I love)

  4. TheQueen says:

“A Star Wars guy or a Star Trek guy”- is this the male version of the Madonna / Whore complex?
Plus, try being a Blake’s Seven guy. Warped Star Trek.

  5. B.E. Earl says:

In the battle between Star Wars and Star Trek, I choose…Battlestar Galactica. Or Firefly. Yeah.

  6. kilax says:

I am definitely Star Wars. But Steven is making me watch TNG from start to finish and I kind of like it 🙂

  7. Fluffycat says:

I think I read that the movie is going to be out sometime next year, but they don’t have a script yet. I just hope it’s not in 3d.

  8. Sybil Law says:

I’m definitely more into Star Wars, but looooved the original Star Trek (transporter!), and even liked Jean Luc Picard on TNG.

  9. Trek. Definitely Trek.

  10. The only way I’d be onboard for any more Star Wars anythings would be if Lucas was not involved. A full on reboot with someone else at the helm would be _amazing_.

  11. Jeff says:

I have been a lifelong Trek fan and when Star Wars came out I wasn’t very interested. My friends had different ideas and dragged me along to Westwood California on opening day to see Star Wars on the really big screen. After seeing the movie, lo and behold, I changed my mind from disinterested to “What was that huge steaming pile of crap I just sat through?”.

After many years, I have mellowed my view somewhat, even sitting through all six films with my kids. I still don’t care for it, but no longer have bad things to say about Star Wars. Except maybe the dialog.

As far as the JJ reboot, I can’t say I am happy with it either. Maybe if he hadn’t thrown 43 years of canon out the window and made Kirk such a Jerk.

Take all this as a warning- when you get old, you get set in your ways. I want my old Trek back!

  12. Sarah says:

I am more of a Star Trek fan because I used to watch it growing up with my Dad and I never got into Star Wars until later.

I always love when you do little Trek Dave Toons. 🙂

  13. Bruce says:

Lucas has really killed much of my love of Star Wars over the years. Not only with his revisionist history, and the god-awful prequels but the more I learn about the actual development and making of the OT, I realize loose more and more respect for the man. Call it petty if you must but that’s where I am these days.

As for Trek, it’s all about The Next Generation for me. No other Trek incarnation comes close to my Enterprise-D crew.

  14. kapgar says:

I thought a sequel was due for 2012?

  15. apricoco says:

I’m a totaly Trekkie. I’ve only seen bits and pieces of Star Wars and I never really liked it. TNG on the other hand? Totally woven into the fabric of my early life. I LOVE TNG WITH ALL MY MIGHT. I started re-watching it recently and it’s even more fantastic now, especially once you get past season 1.

  16. mike says:

Star Trek, all the way down. I’ve only ever seen the post great late 90s hype, molested versions of Star Wars, so I have no great love for that franchise, except Lego Star Wars.
