Tragedy

Posted on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Dave! The drive to Spokane is not a particularly pleasant one.

It's long, it's boring, and it's filled with more nothing than a person really wants to deal with. So whenever I have work there, a wave of dread washes over me. Don't get me wrong... Spokane's a terrific city... I just hate the drive.

But there is a reward at the end of this tedious journey. Because Spokane is where the Best Pizza in the Universe can be found. The mind-numbing hours of driving through vast open spaces isn't so bad knowing that a couple slices of my favorite pizza ever will be waiting for me. It's pretty much all I can think about the entire trip...

Road to Spokane

Road to Spokane

Little Barn on the Prairie!

David's Pizza!

Davincipizza
David's Pizza's Masterpiece... The DaVinci!

But there would be no pizza waiting for me today.

After nearly three hours of mind-numbing boredom, there would be no reward for the drive.

As usual, I don't pass GO, I don't collect $200... I don't even check into my hotel room... I head straight for David's Pizza only to find...

This...

David's Pizza Bulldozed Over and Dead

It's gone.

It's just gone.

And as I sat there in my car staring at the mounds of dirt and rubble that used to be one of my favorite places on earth to eat... I just didn't know what to do with myself. Life had suddenly become meaningless and impossible.

Apparently they will be opening up at a new location "soon," but that doesn't do me much good now.

Now that I am abandoned and pizza-less.

Now that all I have to console me are memories.

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

It must be because I come from Europe but that drive looks amazing. It’s so scenic. Long drives like that over here are just through soul-less industrial areas and moterways. But I can still understand that after a while it might get boring.

    • Dave2 says:

Oh it probably is scenic… the first ten times you drive it! And sometimes you get some pretty skies to look at… but it’s mostly nothing. For three hours. I grew tired of it a long long time ago.
      🙂

  3. My favorite pizza is Lorobi’s back in St. Albans, West Virginia. I haven’t been back to my home state in five years and I fear that when I finally do make it back, I will find Lorobi’s in the same state as your favorite pizza place.

    Sorry it’s gone, hon. 🙁

  4. Robin says:

    I’m sorry for your loss…

  5. Christopher Stogdill says:

Here’s to finding the World’s Second Best Pizza while you wait. I’m a huge fan of Guido’s in Boise. Only pizza I liked better was from the otherwise crappy chain found on the military bases (St. Anthony’s?). Their vegetarian pizza, with added pepperoni, was awesome….as long as they made it an hour before I wanted it and set it out under the lamp to wait for me. It was a weird request, but the vegetarian was too wet and sloppy. That hour dried it out just perfectly for my tastes.

PS. Do yourself a favor and do not drive through Kansas.

    • Dave2 says:

My problem is that I’m a vegetarian who doesn’t like a lot of crap on their pizza. This means that the flavor of the slice has to come from the basics… the crust, sauce, and cheese. You would be shocked how often even then best-rated pizza restaurants have next to NO flavor in those components. They rely on the toppings to add the flavor, which doesn’t work for me at all. David’s was different. Their sauce alone was so delicious I could drink it from a cup. Add that to their wonderful crust… and the cheese/pesto that tops their DaVinci slice, and it’s as good as pizza gets. In my decades of traveling the country and the world, I have never met their equal.

All I can do is hope that when they move to the new location that the pizza tastes the same. I’ve followed too many restaurants after a move where something changed and ruined what was so great in the first place.

  6. Tracy says:

Holy moly. Can 2011, and this month in particular, get much worse? That had to be the saddest moment ever!

  7. timothy says:

    That’s horrible! I’m so sorry.

  8. Nenette says:

Yikes! That’s like driving around the Canadian Prairies. Okay, more like driving out of my city… in every direction.

I’m sorry… you must’ve been devastated. I know I’d feel the same way if anything ever happens to Cafe 22 here.

  9. kilax says:

Wow! I can’t believe it. You’ve loved that place for a long time. What a bummer. I hope they open the new location soon!

  10. the muskrat says:

In between my bouts of sobbing, I’ll type this: I feel you, dude.

  11. Sybil Law says:

    That is the suck!!

  12. Suebob says:

What a shock to the system.

One of these days, I will get to pizzeria bianco in Phoenix. I have heard it is great. You’re right about most pizza. For instance, CA Pizza Kitchen crust is so SWEET. They have great ideas for pizza, but sugary dough kind of wrecks it.

  13. bo says:

    How incredibly sad.

  14. Pia says:

Silly Dave. Everyone knows the best pizza in the USA is Metro Pizza in Las Vegas – ask for pepperoni, ham, black olives, mushrooms and artichoke. Also known as the Capricioso. Too bad you are a vegetarian.

  15. Rita says:

David, so sorry to hear about your favorite pizza place. My condolences…try to have good day.

  16. Sarkawt says:

How awful it must have been for you! I feel you, my friend! 🙁 Sorry!

  17. Ian says:

Oh God! I would be so disappointed. Did you cry?

  18. Etienne says:

They probably just didn’t want to even exist in the same universe with Michele Bachmann. Sorry for your loss. Menu Pages pulls up 1054 listing for pizza in NYC & Brooklyn so, I think we can find you something to eat next time you’re here.
