Construction

Posted on Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Dave! There are four streets I drive on to get to work.

Two of them are closed for construction. This basically means that I have to take two detours twice a day. For the most part, I don't mind, because it's (supposedly) going to make it easier to get from Point A to Point B. At least it will in three months or so when they finish. I don't pretend to understand why they can't WORK EVERY DAY AND GET THE SHIT DONE (instead of showing up seemingly at random whenever they feel like it)... but I guess that's how it works.

As inconvenient as the detours were this morning, that wasn't the most irritating thing about my commute. That would be the mommy-jogger-walkers.

These inconsiderate morons jog down the street THREE-WIDE pushing GIANT STROLLERS. One of them on the sidewalk, two on the street. This alone blocks both foot and auto traffic in one direction... but they don't stop there. They are also WALKING THEIR DOGS, which are wandering all over the place, making them even more of an obstruction.

I didn't have my phone handy as I was forced to follow them down the road. Instead I had to take a picture of them down the street after I parked...

Jogger Mommies

Now, in this photo, the two on the left are jogging single-file because a car was revving up behind them wanting to pass. But when I was behind them, they were side-by-side, effectively blocking the entire lane and not even attempting to share the road. I ended up having to wait for a break in oncoming traffic so I could go around them.

Far be it for me to berate somebody for trying to stay fit... but what a bunch of assholes.

It wouldn't be so bad if they were all jogging single-file on the side of the road... or if they were JOGGING THE SPEED LIMIT... but oh no! They totally don't give a shit that they are taking over THE ENTIRE STREET and causing a backlog of traffic. They're more important than people trying to get to work in the morning, so they just say a big FUCK YOU to motorists and do whatever the hell they want.

Which makes me wonder how long it will be before some pissed off person who's late for work runs them all down in the street.

Hopefully it won't end up being me.

    It won’t be you.
But really – that’s bullshit. I’d be the one revving the engine, too, or blaring my horn.

  2. Etienne says:

I think three-wide strollers must be frackin’ illegal in NYC as I’ve never seen one. People with 2-wide try to come in my store and I literally drip with disdain at them. NYC is CONGESTED and these people need to get a clue and, at least, get a front-back tandem stroller….or have fewer kids.

  3. Sarah says:

I find that it’s so hard to share the road with other people, whether you’re driving or not. Today I got shoved out of the bike lane by another person on a bike because I was going too slow. Instead of waiting the 100 feet for the red light so he could go first he shoves me into Construction on a super busy road.

I am so over other people.

  4. Marc says:

Well, yes, I also often think that if killing idiotic people was legal, quite a lot of bloody spots would mark my paths. People are so self-centered and inconsiderate when it comes to their behavior becoming inconvenient for others that I get seriously worried about our society’s future…

  5. Wow. Assholes, indeed. There’s no good reason for that.

  6. Karen says:

Those are STROLLERS? They look like rickshaws! I’ve never seen a stroller like that in my life. I get wanting to be fit, and I see why they might want to take the kids out with them if nobody’s at home to watch them. But… there have got to be plenty of other streets for them to jog along. And they could certainly go single-file down the sidewalk!

Just because you want to do something –jog with your giant rickshaw strollers three abreast and chat about your your favorite pedicurist– doesn’t mean you should. I don’t get how people can be so inconsiderate in such a crowded world.

Why is their perfect morning stroll so much more important than the daily commute of dozens of people?

Argh. Now I’m starting the morning all pissed off, too. I HATE people like this. We all share this space! It does not belong to you!

You clearly hit on one of my pet peeves with this post. 🙂

  7. J.P. says:

How many kids are in each of those strollers? Paint them yellow and they’d have mini school buses.

  8. And those look like the double strollers that you pack 2 kids into at once! So each of those joggers have at least two kids each! That will be 3 points per hit then, right?

  9. LizP says:

You should report them to the non-emergency police line. Or e-mail them the picture. People like that really suck. And they’re stupid. What if someone hit them?

  10. rude twats. you need a cop friend who can cite them for the off leash dogs and for being in the street.

don’t get me wrong, i am all about them getting fit and socializing and excersising the dogs and getting fresh air (or “the stink blown off them” as my dad says), but they are clearly rude and in danger.

  11. Megan says:

Try to think of the innocent children in said strollers. Of course they’ll probably turn out to be self-absorbed, inconsiderate assholes like their mothers.

    Think of the dogs…

  12. Stacey says:

That is ridiculous. I would lose my shit. I’m surprised they haven’t been mowed down already.

  13. Christopher Stogdill says:

I had to run an early morning errand today and I took note of several mommy-joggers-walking-dogs-and-kids. Not one of them was running a double or triple wide rig. One was in the bike lane and the rest were on the sidewalk.

There wasn’t any apparent issues with these folks taking up too much space. Unless a troop of bike several riders wide wanted to push through, there was enough room for all. Here I’ve seen the bike riders be the problem since they think they own the road.
