Bullet Sunday 215

Posted on Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Dave! You know you had a good time the night before when your stomach hurts from laughing too much.

And drinking way, way too much. But that's besides the point. Unless you're curious as to why this week's list of bullets is fairly skimpy... I think I might be dying.

• Globes. Surprisingly, I was pretty much okay with all the Golden Globe winners. Sure there were a few places where my favorites didn't win, but I can't argue that the people who did win weren't deserving (except Glee. I really, really, don't understand why people like that show). Highlights? Most of the ladies, who were looking pretty incredible. And Robert Downey Jr.'s presentation speech and Jane Lynch and Robert De Niro's acceptance speeches. Quick and entertaining is the name of the game, people.

• Seahawks. Okay. Entirely not surprising how that all turned out, but there's always a part of you which holds on to a sliver of hope despite it all.

DAVETOON: Lil' Dave Disappointed Seahawk Fan

• Schwarzenegger. And so Arnold Schwarzenegger might start making movies again. Please please please let it be true. People can diminish his films all they want, but there is no denying that they are, for the most part, highly entertaining. From his small cameo in The Expendables, it would seem he's still got it. What I wouldn't give for another True Lies or The Terminator or Predator or Commando or Total Recall or many others.

• SNL. Almost every week I find myself asking myself "Self, why in the hell are you still watching Saturday Night Live?" There are exceptions, of course (BETTY WHITE!!) and there are always bright spots no matter how crappy the show gets... but, for the most part, it's been so mind-bogglingly awful for the last several years. And then last night's Gwyneth Paltrow episode comes along and it's actually not that bad. The SNL Short with Pee-Wee Herman was awesome. Even Weekend Update was more good than bad. It would be nice to think that there's a corner being turned here... but, sadly, that's probably not the case. As usual, I'll keep watching just in case.

And now I suppose that I should try to eat something. A bit more difficult than it sounds.

  1. TheQueen says:

Just a few weeks ago on Weekend Update: “How can you remember what channel Eliot Spitzer’s show is on? CNN stands for Client Number Nine.” That is exactly when I decided to start watching SNL as a whole again, not just cherry-picking.

  2. CP says:

Every year I say…”Self, you have been watching SNL for well over 30+ years. You don’t enjoy it any more. Please stop.”

Then, a band will be on that I like. So I watch. And something funny MIGHT happen. So I watch again the following week. Then a cool host shows up. So I watch. Then it’s stupid, but next week, there will be a cool band again.

    And so the cycle goes.

Just when I think I’m out…they pull me back in again.

(See, just because I never saw the Godfather doesn’t mean I don’t know the lingo!) LOL

Besides…the off chance of seeing Jason Sudeikis doing the running man during “What’s Up With That” makes it totally worth the 90 minute torture. Or, Bill Hader playing “Stefan”. Or, a random Amy Poehler sighting on Weekend Update.

Damn. In for a penny, in for a pound.

    • Dave2 says:

We’re in the exact same boat then. They have something JUST interesting enough to keep you watching… and yet disappointment still lingers. Then they do something right, and it hooks you for the next episode despite it all… IT’S A TRAP!!

  3. Andy Hayes says:

When you talk to yourself, do you actually say “Self,…”?

  4. kapgar says:

Sorry about your Seahawks, Dave. It’s weird. Normally I’d openly celebrate a Bears’ victory, especially a Bears’ playoff victory. But this one I wasn’t too over the top about simply because of all the people I know from the PacNW. I actually was celebrating the Jets win vs. the Pats more. Am I a bad Bears fan?

  5. Avitable says:

I think last week’s Jim Carrey episode was even better than Gwyneth’s, too. The audience for the most recent SNL didn’t really seem to be laughing that much, but I thought they had some really good sketches.

    • Dave2 says:

Jim Carey was good, but I didn’t like as many sketches as I did this week, and Weekend Update didn’t have the bite that Seth had going on this episode. Update works best when the people behind the desk have a more sarcastic… even condescending… tone to their delivery, and Meyers is really inconsistent there (which is a shame, because he can pull it off beautifully).

  6. Sybil Law says:

I missed SNL this week. 🙁

  7. Sarah says:

I like Glee, I don’t think it’s anything special…not Golden Globe worthy but I think it’s fun. I hate Gwyneth Paltrow. I don’t know something about her just makes me want to punch her. Too bad Vahid won’t just let me go around punching people. I’m pretty sure he’d get an awesome blog post out of it.

    • Dave2 says:

I love Gwyneth Paltrow… every time I’ve seen her in an interview, she’s been very grounded and grateful for everything she has in life, which is a pleasant surprise from most of what I see coming out of Hollywood. And while she’s not the best actress around, I think she always does a great job no matter where she ends up… like in Iron Man where she does quite a lot with such a minor role.

And, if it would mean that Vahid would start blogging again, I’d very much appreciate it if you could go around punching people in the face! 😀

  8. I enjoyed this year’s golden globes. I’ve never watched a single episode of Glee in my life and have no real desire to ever do so.

    • Dave2 says:

I’ve tried more than once to get into Glee because I have friends who love it. But it’s such a heinous mess of stereotypes and AutoTune that I just can’t do it. Of course, I’ve never been a big fan of theater stuff like this, so it’s probably not meant for me anyway.

  9. Poppy says:

I thought it was a done deal given that Arnold was back to movies. It was a treat to see his 5 seconds in Expendables.

    • Dave2 says:

I certainly hope so. My only worry is that he’ll take something horrible just to get back in the game, and end up sinking his career in the process.

  10. martymankins says:

I saw a good amount of the Golden Globes. Robert Downey Jr. gave a kick ass intro. Ricky Gervais was great in his second hosting gig.

And bring on Predator 3, bitches!

    • Dave2 says:

I thought that Ricky was great too. Of course, a bunch of spoiled movie stars who are used to everybody worshipping them were offended because they’ve lost the ability to laugh at themselves… but that only added to the comedy for me.

  11. Invader_Stu says:

Schwarzenegger is still the best action hero of all time. They just don’t make them (movies) like they used to in the 80s

    • Dave2 says:

No. They most certainly do not. Nobody tries to make movies fun anymore… the same subjects are all so dark and senseless now. The exception seems to be James Cameron. But he’s so wildly unsuccessful that it’s easy to understand why nobody else is following his example.
      🙂

  12. YES TO SCHWARZENEGGER!!!
