Heat

Posted on Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Dave!I've said many times that I'd rather be too warm than too cool. Probably because I've been miserable more often from cold than from heat. Getting frostbite when I was young didn't help.

Except now I'm ready to change my mind. The temperature this past week has been outrageously hot. Not Sahara Desert hot, but hot. Not Phoenix hot, but hot. So hot that my air conditioner can't keep up.

Stupid air conditioner.

My previous place had Central Air, which I now realize is the most amazing thing in the universe. With Central Air, the sweet, cool, air conditioning reaches every room. With a regular air conditioner, this is not the case. My living room and kitchen are comfortable. But by the time the air reached my bedroom it's all warm again. Which means I now refer to my bedroom as Disco Inferno... but not in a good way.

I worry that I may burst into flame at any moment...

DAVETOON: Lil' Dave on Fire!

Now is probably not the best time to worry whether or not my underpants are flame retardant.

Well, we live in an old house with central air, and I still have a window unit in my bedroom. Stupid rising heat and all that- it would seriously suck without the window unit.
If I were you, I’d sleep in the living room.
If I was the Wonder Twin, I’d blow cold air on you.
    That just sounded so creepy.

  2. Hilly Sue says:

Oh I’d much rather be too cold! Of course, I grew up in shitty hot hot heat so I’ve learned to loathe the summer. Thank GOD I got out of that swampy humidity in shitty Florida though!

In the great a/c debate in my house, the rule is that the hot person wins. If you’re cold, you can put on a jacket or blankie but if you’re too hot, what can you do then, yanno?

  3. Lisa says:

I love the heat! The hotter the better, in fact, and I don’t have any kind of air conditioning in my house and don’t often use it in my car. But, we have dry heat here which I know is very different that what you have. When I lived in Georgia A/C was my best friend.

  4. Sarah says:

This was my first heat wave without an air conditioner.

I did not like it. Not one bit.

  5. Sorata says:

    Haha finally able to post?

Yes, wasn’t it ridiculously hot this past week? Not that it was so hot it was unbearable but definitely a bit too much. It’s supposed to be cooler later this week, so I’m sure you will like it better 🙂

  6. Avitable says:

I prefer cold to heat. You can always put on more layers if you get cold, but you can’t always take off more layers if it’s hot.

  7. You can call me, 'Sir' says:

It’s a small price to pay for your living in the town of Awesomeville in the valley of Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

    My opinion, of course.

  8. Spontaneous Dave Combustion!

  9. delmer says:

We’ve had a week of relative coolness when compared to the heat and humidity of a week ago. The hot moves in again today (though the high will be a mere 92) with moisture. I’m a bit more used to it than the new residents to the house are… but I’ve still had enough.

  10. muskrat says:

Poor little Dave with his flaming body parts!
I don’t like being warm either.

  11. But not in a good way!!! Me, too.

When I lived in Portland before the move, I finally got central air INSTALLED in my condo, at significant expense, because I just couldn’t handle the inferno any longer. I freaking loved that central air . . . for the two weeks I used it before the Japan job came out of thin air and I sold the damn house and moved. Frick!

    Love the Dave ‘Toon!

  12. You see this is why I specifically buy flame retardant pants in the first place. Then you never have to worry.

  13. BosGuy says:

No, no… get another AC and lets continue our warm days and nights. I live in Boston and have loved the warm weather. I don’t even want to begin to think about the cold — I’m not ready…

  14. martymankins says:

We’ve had central air here at our home since last summer (had a broken swamp cooler for years before). I now have to be spoiled for the rest of my life and never be without air. Even with my love of the heat.
