Precious

Posted on Monday, February 8th, 2010

Dave!Today I noticed that I'm getting increasingly upset over things that just aren't important. This morning, for example, I went on a tirade after listening to somebody on television use the full title of the movie "Precious" while discussing Oscar nominations. I don't know why. Probably because "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" is a stupid-ass name for a movie. I am guessing the film studio wanted to capitalize on the author somehow, but it only makes them look pathetic and desperate when you consider that "Stand By Me wasn't released as "Stand By Me: Based on the Novella 'The Body' by Stephen King." I mean, holy shit, if the people making "Stand By Me" didn't feel the need to whore out STEPHEN FUCKING KING for their movie, should we really have to give two shits where "Precious" came from?

Granted, my disdain is undoubtedly amplified by the fact that I don't give a crap about EVER seeing the film "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire"... but honestly, is this really a reason to start freaking out?

Apparently it is if you are me.

I'm really hoping that this unfounded hostility towards inconsequential things goes away soon.

Preferably before "Alice in Wonderland: Extrapolated from the Novel 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' as Well as the Novel 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There' by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Better Known as Lewis Carroll" is released to theaters on March 5th.

If that pisses you off, don’t ever watch the movie haha it’ll drive you over the edge. I walked out of it feeling depressed and pissed off. It was good in ways but so so bad in many ways too.

  2. Sarah says:

I read that Push book and it pissed me off. Then I watched the movie and it pissed me off.

I guess no matter what I can’t stand people who can’t use decent grammar. Or at least spell checker. I get that she was supposed to be illiterate and that’s what the whole movie was about, blah blah, but I just don’t care.

  3. MIke says:

Ok, let’s analyze this. Apparently they found it essential to change the name from the book to the film. Somebody decided it had to be changed for whatever reason. “Push” wasn’t good enough. “Precious” was a better title despite the fact they chose to make a film based on the book. Then somebody came along and said, but, even though, we thought our name was better than the creator, we don’t have enough conviction to stand by it so we are going to back-peddle and use a silly bit of “colonizing.” Nope, you sound like you have a case for a rant.
Here’s another thing. They take a classic novel and then they hire a hack director who is popular, or ethnic or the flavor of the month who then commences to put his/her own touches on this established classic. Was it really necessary to have an Indian dance scene in Vanity Fair? What was the purpose except as a vanity injection for the female Indian director who was clearly out of her league.
And Furthermore! did you hear they are going to make a film on Stretch Armstrong?! WTF is that? A film based on a rubber doll? Jeeez

    You aren’t alone, my friend.

This has been bothering me since award season started. I forget who did it, but at one of the award shows (SAG?) one of the actors who was announcing the nominees said “based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire” under his breath after The Hurt Locker or An Education or one of the other nominees. Made me laugh a little, but generally it’s pissed me off.

  5. jenny says:

Okay, this totally cracked me up. I had the EXACT same thought when I watched some of the Golden Globes. The name of the movie is PRECIOUS!!! Why can’t they just leave it at that?

  6. zuhn says:

Sounds like your disdain is about to go through the roof when I tell you that they re-released the book and called it “Precious: Based on the novel Push”.

  7. Sybil Law says:

“Apparently it is if you are me.”
Or me, in the throes of PMS.
    🙂

  8. A-frickin-men. Seriously, I thought I was the only one annoyed by this.

  9. Suebob says:

Oh holy cow. I spent my whole shower this morning thinking about this very subject.

I finally decided that it was probably an attempt by the director/producer to ensure that the novel got attention. It seems like a big stretch though.

  10. Ren says:

I find it only slightly more annoying than “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.” Still more, though.

On the other hand, “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” is a perfectly good title, so it isn’t just about length. (That’s what she said!)

  11. ep says:

It should just be re-titled “Pretentious” and leave it at that.

  12. claire says:

Interesting. I seriously doubt the full title was anyone in the studio’s choice. From the first time I heard the full name, I felt certain that it was a requirement that the author was lucky enough to get in her contract. Hollywood rarely gives writers or screenwriters the credit they deserve. Good for her, I say.

  13. josh says:

Dude, I admit the title is obnoxious…but “Precious” was absolutely incredible, no denying it.

  14. Michelle M. says:

I’m jumping on the bandwagon. It annoys me too.

  15. bj says:

    get some sleep!

    And RELAX. seriously!
