Apologize

Posted on Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Dave! The reason I try to avoid saying anything negative about people, places, and things is because no matter which person, place, or thing you badmouth, it's going to be somebody's favorite. The reason I know this is because people badmouth my favorite things all the time.

There are exceptions, of course. Even a cursory review of my past blog entries would reveal that I fail miserably when it comes to not saying negative things. Here's just a few of my failures...

Microsoft
Internet Explorer
Apple
Ann Coulter
Nancy Grace
Bill O'Reilly
Rosie O'Donnell
David Caruso
Stride Gum
Spelling Bees
Jared the Subway Sandwich Whore
President Bush
Dick Cheney
Pat Robertson
President Obama
Hillary Clinton
Clowns
Orly Taitz
12 Grain Bread
TicketMaster
FOX News
John McCain
Tony Danza
Kelly Osbourne
Dr. Phil
Judge Judy
Martha Stewart
Pat O'Brien
Paul Marx
Mayor Greg Nickels
• And many others...

But here's the thing. I don't apologize for any of it. I feel what I feel then I write what I write. If I offend somebody because I've badmouthed their favorite thing, well... it's my blog and that's really too bad. They don't have to read it. Because unless I've gotten the facts wrong or said something that was interpreted wrong, I'm not going to apologize for how I feel about something.

Which presents a problem when somebody emails me saying I should apologize for hating on the television series Dollhouse because it was their favorite show and now it's been cancelled.

Um, yeah... while I do feel bad because my favorite shows seem to get cancelled all the time... am I sorry enough to apologize for saying I think Dollhouse is (was) a steaming pile of crap?

Not really, no.

I will apologize for not trying harder to avoid saying anything negative about people, places, and things though.

My bad.

I'll work on that right after I dump out this Ronzoni Bistro "Rotini with Tomato Basil Pasta" which is probably the worst pasta I have ever eaten in my entire life. Seriously, if you want to know just how bad pasta can taste, by all means go try a bag of this heinous stuff.

  1. A. Lewis says:

What? You said something bad about Pat Robertson? No…..

  2. Robin says:

I love this entry, mainly because most of the people on your list are also people that irk me….but I forgot about some of them for some reason, so thank you for reminding me. Can you add Sarah Palin to that list?

Regarding the apologizing thing, I hope you were being facetious – I don’t get why people are so emotionally invested in you hating or complaining about something on your blog – it’s not like you killed their cat or stole their wallet or something….there are so many other things to be passionate about….like Chinese food, Jelly Belly or IKEA.

  3. Poppy says:

I know what you mean. We don’t like Glee, despite everyone else on the freaking planet being GAGA over it.

  4. Lynda says:

I don’t like to share my music tastes with people at all, because I invariably get, “You like that singer/group. WHY? OMG they are awful!”

But I think we are all entitled to our likes and dislikes. I am not going to stop having affection for a friend because they have a different opinion than me.

I actually have a love/hate with Dollhouse. It has gotten good. Most of the time, it’s so bad though.

But don’t apologize for being unique! The world would be so boring if we all liked the same things!

    • Dave2 says:

Which is exactly right. I honestly don’t want to be mean or offend everybody, but think it’s important that people realize that the things they like are not necessarily things everybody else likes. And vice-versa.

  5. Sybil Law says:

WHAT? Someone seriously thought you should apologize?! People are fucking stupid.
I happen to enjoy reading other people’s opinions on stuff – even if they differ from my own. Sometimes, it makes me look at things from a new angle – sometimes not.
But apologizing for your personal opinion? Stupid.

    • Dave2 says:

The upshot of the message was that I should apologize to “Dollhouse” fans because it is “disrespectful” to take joy in the demise of something that other people care passionately about.

I don’t really understand this, because everything I said about not liking “Dollhouse” was written BEFORE it was cancelled, and I never mentioned it after. Until now.

  6. Hilly says:

The thing about this entry that I love is that you are NOT going to apologize for the things that you don’t like. Honestly, you shouldn’t HAVE to! If someone gets that upset because you don’t like Dollhouse then they need to check themselves and figure out why what you think means so damned much to them.

Do you know how many things that you can’t stand that I absolutely love? Glee, musicals in general, Dollhouse, The Amazing Race “being a PC” and using Twitter to announce blog posts and uh, some people (haha). Those are just a few and you know what? Who cares? We’re friends because we love the internal bits about each other, not because one of us dislikes something the other one likes.

Dude, people need to chill the fuck out, seriously. 😉

  7. josh says:

I lurrrrrrrrve Kelly Osbourne and proudly own both of her albumz. So. There!

  8. noraisins says:

That Ronzoni stuff is terrible. I can’t believe anyone would buy it a second time. I still have nightmares about it. Yech!

    • Dave2 says:

Word. I was fooled into taking a second bite, because I thought I was imagining how bad the first bite tasted! The pasta texture is gag-inducing awful. I really didn’t care for the sauce, which was surprising, because tomato-basil is a favorite. I’m willing to make certain sacrifices for convenience, but this stuff was definitely asking too much!

  9. FWIW, your opinion is your opinion. People should respect it, even if they disagree with it.

Though a slight disagreement on Dollhouse. Topher’s not whiny and annoying. He’s a pompous asshole. He’s thinks he’s better than everybody because he’s a genius.

Still, I’d like to have seen Dollhouse continue, but I agree with Hilly in that post. It was taking a long time to get to the point, though recently it was starting to take shape.

  10. martymankins says:

Your list mirrors mine for the most part.

Although Pat O’Brien, while I agree he’s an asshole, those calls he made to the sex line were pretty damn humorous – uncensored (which I previously commented on in your blog post on him)
