Guinness

Posted on Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Dave!Guinness celebrated their 250th anniversary today!

Deliciously wholesome and hearty Irish Guinness Draught.

I can't remember when I had my first pint of Guinness, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't here in the US. It was probably in London and I think it was purchased for me. But even though I don't remember where or when, I do remember most everything else. I remember it was a properly poured pint instead of out of a can or bottle or made by somebody who didn't know what they were doing. I remember it was different and delicious. I remember joking about having to eat it with a spoon because it was so thick. I also remember that I had another.

I still drink Guinness from time to time. Mostly at pubs when I see that they know how to serve it up right.

And, of course, I drop by the Guinness Brewery at St. James's Gate whenever I'm in Dublin...

DAVETOON: Dave and Bad Monkey take the Guinness Factory Tour in Dublin

Once when I was in Ireland, I had some time to kill and so I took the Wild Wicklow Tour where I saw something pretty amazing. The Guinness Estate (owned by the Guinness family) has its own lake... Lough Tay. It's a pretty lake in some very pretty countryside, but that's not what makes it amazing. What makes it amazing is that they imported some white sand for the beach there, which looks something like this...

A photo of Lough Tay's white sand beach.

But to really appreciate what this means, you kind of have to look at it from space. Like this image from Google Maps...

Lough Tay Guinness Lake!

And then need to use your imagination...

Lough Tay Guinness Lake Morph!

And there you have it...

It's a lake that looks like a pint of Guinness!

Pretty cool, huh?

Happy Anniversary, Guinness!

Hahaha, that’s awesome. I’ve only had Guinness poured at a pub once (well, twice, I had a second fill), and that was at Surfer’s Paradise in Queensland (Australia). YUM!

  2. Hilly says:

I’m not a huge lover of Guinness (too rich for my blood) however I would drink it all day and all night long if that’s what it took to be in Ireland right now!

  3. christie says:

    heh.

I wish I liked Guinness, it always looks so good but it tastes like dirty quarters to me…

  4. OMG. That is an awesome correlation!

  5. Sybil Law says:

    Awesome!
I want some Guinness right now! What? It’s after noon!

  6. B.E. Earl says:

I go through phases when Guinness is literally the only thing that I drink. Usually in the Winter or Spring.

But now I’m thinking of having a few this weekend. Cheers!

  7. brandon says:

my favorite style of guinness is served cold right before a Vegas Legends show. it really brings out the hooker-like aroma.

  8. Yum. My fave drink of all time. When I went back to England for a visit last year, we took a trip over to Dublin. Visiting the brewery was an absolute must. The free pint you get at the top was the icing on the cake 😉

  9. You can call me, 'Sir' says:

I have a very unnatural love for Guinness.

  10. Poppy says:

My brother adores Guinness so I have sent him a link to your post.

I like it too if it’s from the TAP.

  11. Mik says:

That is cool, I cannot say I like Guinness or any other of the bitter type beers like Newcastle Brown Ale, more of a lager man.

  12. Peggy Archer says:

    Mmm….. Guinness. Tasty stuff.

  13. kapgar says:

Katie said that in order to properly celebrate this anniversary, you and Bad Monkey should escort one lucky reader to Ireland to enjoy our fair drink in it’s home environs. She says she volunteers.

  14. Anthony McG says:

Only getting around to reading this now Dave. It was some day in Dublin. I know a couple of the girls involved in the PR agency working on the day so I had media access to a couple of the pubs. Tom Jones was over playing in the Store House along with a load of other acts. Another friend of mine actually got access to that. Pretty much the whole country raised a toast to Arthur Guinness at 17:59. Hopefully share a pint with ya the next time you’re over.

  15. The Momshell says:

I know that said Lough Tay but I read Tough Lay.

  16. Jeff says:

I’ve been to this lake and took a few shots of Jameson while enjoying the view
