Faster

Posted on Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Dave! When you are seriously overwhelmed with work, your first instinct is to work faster. Rip through your projects at break-neck speed so that you can get more done in the limited time you have. Of course the faster you go, the sloppier you are and the more errors you make, so there's definitely a trade-off. This morning I ran across a mistake from yesterday's work that was so massive that I very nearly had to fire myself. Fortunately, I caught the problem before it blew up and destroyed half the galaxy. Because, you know, my job is heinously important like that. And, if you didn't know, I guess you do now.

I am dreading going to work tomorrow for fear of what mistakes I might find from today.

I was working on four projects simultaneously, so who knows what could have happened?

If the earth explodes because of another careless error tomorrow, I'm really sorry about that.

“If the earth explodes because of another careless error tomorrow, I’m really sorry about that.”

I, for one, will be thrilled. Maybe when I’m dead I can finally get some sleep.

  2. Mattie says:

If someone finds a mistake, just flash that great smile you have and all will be forgiven.

Either that or you’re going to be totally frakked.

Either way, you’ll get a freebie post out of it!

  3. Christian says:

Just be careful not to divide by zero. Black holes caused by such actions can be a real bugger to mop up.

  4. kat says:

thank you for not blowing up the galaxy, dave.

  5. delmer says:

So … your work on the Super Collider is almost finished then?

  6. sizzle says:

This goes without saying: You work too damn much.

  7. elfenkate says:

    Thunder, lightning, floods and earthquakes!
    It makes sense now.
    Dave needs sleep!

I thought maybe I was doing it with the power of my great and vast nicotine withdrawal.

So I now I can’t have a cigarette and save the world?
    Frak.

  8. Hilly Sue says:

If you make the Earth explode, can you please also redesign a new one where no freaking asstards are allowed?

    Yanno…in your spare time.

  9. Catherine says:

@Delmer – you read my mind! I was gonna say, gee, that’s a real conCERN, wink wink.

  10. Tug says:

If you could point an explosion my way, that’d be great – thankssomuch. 😉 Good luck with a non-mistake kinda day…

  11. Göran says:

Gah, the adrenalin rush of finding an error like that! Good thing you found your own. When it happens to me I feel immensely stupid. The responsibility of an entire galaxy mustn´t be taken lightly!

  12. No explosions yet but my fax machine has been down for over an hour. Mind if I blame that on you?

  13. serap says:

Well, I’m headed towards the end of yesterday’s tomorrow right now, and I can tell you that everything is looking ok. Sometimes it’s so handy to read your blog from the future!

  14. lizriz says:

Twice this week I’ve said in emails that I made a mistake only to realize that I had not actually made said mistake. Which better than having made the mistake, but still teh stupid.

  15. Dude. The earth is going to explode? Tomorrow? Dang. I was hoping to get drunk this coming weekend.

  16. Beth says:

Sooooo, are you busy? I couldn’t really tell….

  17. Lisa says:

Does this mean we can also blame you for rising gas prices, jobless rate, credit crisis, inflation, recession, oh wait…we aren’t in a recession! Silly me! Well, you did say the earth could possibly explode due to your error rate.

I think that you are, uh, human. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t make mistakes when they are overworked and trying to make too many things happen at one time.

Usually, when I make mistakes at work they are doozies. When I worked as a database administrator I once blew up something so badly that it took a year to correct it. My former co-worker still talks about it 15 years later it was that good.

I hope you were able to get things on track today and that you aren’t working yourself into the ground.

  18. Tracy says:

Dude. I totally understand where your head is right now. I spent 4 1/2 hours straight yesterday editing sound for a show that opens tomorrow night, and because we were moving so fast, we didn’t realize that one piece of music that we’d pulled was the totally wrong movement. The actor in the show was very nice about it, but I was mortified. Plus we had layered that music into about 5 other cues that all had to be redone. Argh. Not earth-shattering stuff, but in my world, very important.

  19. Winter says:

How is it that you work at my company, in my department, and I didn’t know it? And how eerie is it that I have the exact same issues as you… Hmmmn.

  20. kapgar says:

The other downside to working faster is when your boss finds out, s/he will think you can work that fast all the time and assign you greater numbers of projects as a result. Sorry you’re stressed out.

  21. joy says:

I know what you mean. Whenever I try to rush something I usually end up fucking something up. I’ve learned to tell myself to SLOW DOWN before I do any damage. 🙂
I came to tell you that your Twitter cracks me up all day long!!!

  22. My father used to have a sign on his desk that read, “The hurrieder I go, the behinder I get.” I guess that is true.

  23. Sarah says:

You just can’t let the Earth explode before I get to see pineapple express.

But after that ya know you can do all the exploding necessary.

  24. Talena says:

I got my order today! It’s AWESOME! Thank you!!
