Alien

Posted on Friday, March 14th, 2008

Dave! This morning I climbed out of the shower after entirely not-enough sleep and thought I was hearing things. But oh no... running to the window I confirmed my worst fears... THE KILLER GEESE HAVE RETURNED!

After getting dressed and arming myself with a squirt bottle, I cautiously made my way downstairs and into the parking lot. But they had gone. Probably off attacking some elderly neighbor or eating a cat or something. If all of a sudden you stop seeing blog entries from me, that probably means the evil geese finally got me. The bastards.

I always dread looking through the new Comic Previews Catalog when it arrives, because there's usually something geeky and super-cool I want that I don't need. And more often than not, it's stupidly expensive too. This time it's stupider than usual, but I can't help myself! I want it so bad!

OMG!

CUTEST...

TOY...

EVER!

Lil' Alien Kubrick!

They blew up a little Kubrick Alien 400% and are releasing him as an 11-inch action figure. He's beautiful... and he'd better be for $60.00 WITH DISCOUNT! It should cost like $40.00 tops, but with the US Dollar practically worthless on the international market, anything imported is insanely expensive.

Oh well.

Speaking of cool toys I can't afford, my Apple Time Capsule finally arrived! Luckily the box wasn't empty this time, because I don't think I could handle the crushing disappointment twice. It's an amazing device. Within 30 seconds of plugging it in, I was creating my first backup. 30 seconds after that I was messing around with my wirelessly shared volume, creating a media depository. It's brilliant in every way...

Apple Time Capsule!

But before I go... Amy Sherman-Palladino (of Gilmore Girls fame) has a new show called The Return of Jezebel James which I have really been looking forward to. Until I actually watched it. For anybody who doesn't follow me on Twitter, here was my reaction...

Return of Jezebel James LAUGH TRACK SUCKS

The clever rapid-fire dialogue and quirky characters are there... but A F#@%ING LAUGH TRACK?!? Totally ruins the show. Horribly distracting. FAIL!!

FAIL!

  1. This is probably going to sound blasphemous, but I’ve never seen “Gilmore Girls” 🙁 I guess I’ll check it out when we get back to the U.S. A live audience is one thing, but laugh tracks are cheesy!

  2. Melanie says:

It may be because I’m tired, or it may be because FAIL never ceases to amuse me, but you made me laugh. Out loud. In the utter silence of the apartment. Then I jumped a mile, because loud laughter, even your own, will scare the shit out of you if you are sitting in utter silence.

  3. RW says:

Holy crap! I thought Xenu was just a story!! RUN!

  4. Hilly Sue says:

I realized halfway into the first show that the laugh track did not bother me as much as it bothered you…I seemed to be able to drown it out. I thought the show was funny and once I ignored the laugh track, I actually giggled quite a bit.

Maybe they’ll take the criticism to heart and dump the canned laughter? Write them a letter that says “FAIL!” ;).

  5. Hilly Sue says:

PS – I did not mean for that to sound snotty. I’m just used to drowning stuff out what with all the loud Ventrillo/WoW action that goes on every damned night 😉

  6. Winter says:

Grrr. Am not a fan of laugh tracks. I’m smart enough to know when I’ve heard something funny. And I love the alien! But not the price.

  7. Göran says:

Damn it, that Kubrik Alien is fantastic. Won´t the Time Capsule get overheated in a jif? It´s just a hard drive in a fitting plastic shell. And yes, I´ll probably get one too.

  8. Anthony says:

    I like saying fail. FAIL!

  9. andi says:

Your talk of delicious hot dog buns made me go out and buy the next best thing you can buy here in Asia. Delicious sliced fresh bread to wrap the hot dogs I had to eat up in. I read this news and thought you might be interested. I don’t want to seem like I stalker but always remember what tv shows various people like. Cupid is going to be reinvented by Rob Thomas.

  10. Avitable says:

I remember seeing some clips from this show earlier this year, and even without a laugh track, I didn’t find that it was nearly as good as GG.

The laugh track is one reason I can’t watch How I Met Your Mother.

  11. Tracy Lynn says:

So I’m guessing you won’t give the show a pass?

I didn’t even bother because every single thing I read about it was negative. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen so much negative reviewing on a show.

  12. Oh, damn. I’ve got to get one of those for the kids. Kick ass!

  13. Jonathan says:

I saw “Jezebel,” I had high hopes for it. I mean, the title is awesome! But alas, the pacing of the dialogue and the laugh track made everything seem so lame.

I did, however, enjoy “do you smell toast?” and the hello kitty phone.

  14. sizzle says:

That sucks! I was so looking forward to a Parker Posey show. 🙁

  15. Hilly Sue says:

Avi – How I Met Your Mother has a laugh track? I’ve never noticed it! I guess I do tune things out :).

  16. jake titus says:

I don’t understand the need for laugh tracks. If a show is funny I shouldn’t need an extra cue to bust a stitch. If they were really necessary, then why don’t we have crying or screaming tracks?

  17. SJ says:

OMGOMGOMG!!!!! I am jumping up and down! Well, I was before I stopped to type.

That Alien is utterly AWESOME! Sooo much better than my little plush one. I must have one. God, I hope the price drops before Christmas.

This reminds me: When the RoboRaptor came out (before I got one and saw that it didn’t work as beautifully as I’d dreamed), I was hoping and praying they’d do a version that was the Xenomorph from the Alien movies. That would have been the ultimate toy of my dreams.

  18. Bec says:

You made me spend time looking at toys. You made me spend more money in my head than I could ever even fantasy justify… But I like the ideas!

  19. claire says:

Yes! The laugh track drove me fucking CRAZY!!! I couldn’t believe it either… I really thought they’d been done away with.

  20. kapgar says:

I want one of those aliens. And, ideally, it will eradicate the world’s goose population. I had a dream about geese the other night. That can’t be a good sign.
