Bullet Sunday 63

Posted on Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Dave!Buuuuuuuuuullet Sunday! Buuuuuuuuuullet Sunday! Bullet Sunday! Bullet Sunday! Bullet Sunnnnnnnnnnnnnndaaaaaaaayy! Amen.

Driver. Remember the good old days when driving was a relatively effortless endeavor? When you could be assured that most of the people out on the road were semi-competant behind the wheel? Now-a-days I get the feeling that nobody else out there knows how the hell to drive. I spend every waking minute on the road having to watch out for all the crazy crap that other people do so I don't get in an accident. Just driving to the grocery store is now a massively stressful ordeal. It would be easy to put the blame on mobile phones... but I honestly think people are just getting stupider and stupider. Today I saw a pedestrian get nailed by a dumbass bitch who didn't bother to look right before making her turn. This is not complicated stuff... how hard is it to remember that you look left-right-left before pulling out into traffic? The guy bounced up and walked away... but what if he hadn't? When are people going to realize that a car can be a deadly weapon if you don't pay attention?

Flavorful. Mew left a comment in my Jellybean entry asking what my favorite jellybean flavors are. After much deliberation and taste-testing, I've finally come up with my top ten...

  1. Juicy Pear
  2. Grape Jelly
  3. Buttered Popcorn
  4. Cream Soda
  5. Chocolate Pudding
  6. Orange Sherbet
  7. Toasted Marshmallow
  8. Watermelon
  9. Green Apple
  10. French Vanilla

Yummy. Now I'm sad that I've eaten all my jellybeans. Except the coffee and licorice ones. Blech.

Worst. I've already laid the honor of BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR on Juno. Now I have the extreme displeasure of awarding WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR on Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Sure there are probably movies that sucked more, but this horrible confusing mess of the film is by far the most disappointing. Talk about taking a can't-miss franchise and flushing it down the toilet. I'm happy that I never bothered to see it in theaters, but am really pissed that I just bought it on DVD. Stunning special effects do not a good movie make. I can't believe that Johnny Depp signed off on the script.

Winner. Well, if it's possible for a format to actually win the Hi-Def format war, I guess it's going to be Blu-Ray. Not that I'm surprised or anything. I've been reading articles like this saying so since almost the beginning. I still think that it doesn't much matter... whichever one comes out on top, digital delivery is the future. Blu-Ray (or whatever) is just a stop-gap. Still, I'm happy to have come out on top for once... I've still got the bitter taste of failure in my mouth from hopping on the mini-disc fiasco.

Terminated. Watched the sneak-preview of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and was not very impressed. As desperate as I am for new television during the writer's strike, I don't think this is it. About the only high point was getting to see Summer Glau again... but that just made me miss Firefly all the more. I'll undoubtedly watch it for a while to see how things go, but I don't have my hopes up. Fortunately, Series 2 of the excellent British show Torchwood is due to air here in the US on January 26th... now there's sci-fi television to get excited about.

I knew that when I went to the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and couldn’t even follow the plot… that I wouldn’t want to see the 3rd. It’s too bad, because Johnny Depp was so funny in the first one!

  2. whit says:

We just watched Pirates and I actually thought it was better than the 2nd- which isn’t saying much.

Hi-def and Blue-Ray are going to be obsolete before they ever do big. Disney announced that they will be delivering shows and movies on XBOX live (hey, that’s owned by Microsoft, I wonder how Jobs feels about that?)

  3. Hilly says:

    1. I am so glad that someone else actually likes Buttered Popcorn jellybeans. I have to admit that they are my second favorite flavored Jelly Belly and everyone else pretty much thinks I’m gross for thinking so.

    2. I watched Pirates while totally fucking sick this week and still thought it sucked the nut.

    3. I don’t even think I am going to watch The Sarah Connor Chronicles at all. I wasted time on Bionic Woman and don’t want to make the same mistake. I’ll just be ooh-ing and ahh-ing over Torchwood like you.

My replies look like a bunch of kiss asinness tonight, but I guess I can’t help it if great minds…well, you know.

  4. Torchwood! Season 2, yeah! I just finished re-watching season 1 tonight.

January 26 in the US? I didn’t think they aired it in the UK yet.
    Either way works for me….

  5. mew says:

i love orange sherbet lemon-lime and peach! mmmmm.

  6. Baak says:

Agree with you 100% on the drivers – it is much worse than it’s ever been.

My pet theory is it’s simply stress-driven (cough).

Cram enough mice into a small enough maze and they’d drive the same way.

  7. Gecko Rock says:

My only beef with digital delivery is that I cannot loan out my movies and music to friends and neighbors.

  8. Lisa says:

Ewww, buttered popcorn and toasted marshmallow are the ones we throw out all the time. We love the licorice ones though. Hey, maybe we should trade!

  9. The Chad says:

I was crushed to hear of blu-rays victory. Now I need a new toy.

I almost don’t even care if The Sarah Conner Chronicles are bad. It’s The Freakin’ Terminator! (well, not the real one, but I can deal with it)

  10. Not A Granny says:

I watched an elderly driver at the grocery store this weekend, back her car up, without looking behind her at all. She was looking forward the entire time, I know because I was looking back watching her, afraid she was going to lurch forward and hit me. She kept backing up until she bumped the car in back of her, then oh so slowly put the car in Drive and started forward. I was very frightened!!

  11. Miss Britt says:

I can’t eat candy that doesn’t taste like candy. It’s a “thing” for me. I love, love, love buttered popcorn… just not if it’s a jelly bean.

  12. Mr. Fabulous says:

Personally, I thought the second installment of Pirates was the weakest, but I don’t even like jellybeans, so what do I know?

  13. bogup says:

Just because of YOUR suggestion, I’ve been eating the last of the 4 lb Jelly Belly jar sold @ Costco. 49 flavors and nearly impossible for me to choose which ones I like best. I do know the ones I don’t like: root beer, licorice, sizzling cinnamon. Anyone want to trade flavors?

  14. The first Pirates movie was quite good. I thought there was something wrong with me as I got awfully confused by what the heck was going on in the second and third movies. It wasn’t just that I couldn’t follow the plot, they seemed to go on *forever*.

  15. Feel free to send me your licorice jelly beans.

  16. chillywilly says:

Blu-Ray was always my choice from the beginning. All of the details and tech specs plus Disney being on board, made it a no-brainer decision for me.

As for the MiniDisc fiasco, I used it for years with pretty decent success. I still use my portable recorder to record audio for the short films I work on. Eventually, it will be replaced with a digital recorded, which will make it easier to import files into the computer. But for recording and portability, it still works well for most things.

  17. Lewis says:

“Stupider and stupider”. Is that a word? Let alone, a word TWICE? Just checking to see how your Scrabble skills are.

  18. Avitable says:

Digital delivery won’t be mainstream for at least ten years. There are still people out there who buy VHS. Even DVD hasn’t yet dominated the market, and with such a small percentage of the population who have high-speed internet, I don’t think digital delivery will be available for a while.

  19. Dustin says:

Juicy Pear is the shit (like, the good kind).

Juno was indeed awesome, but I liked the third Pirates just ’cause it had Keith Richards in it…ya I’m a ho that way.

I want a T-Shirt that says “Silencio Old Man!”

  20. Suzy says:

As you recall, I was hit by a car while I was walking by a dumb shit YOUNG guy. Same thing, didn’t look before he pulled out.

I only wear a bluetooth while I drive and it’s the best thing EVER. (and soon to be the law) No hands changes your life. However, recently I went to pick up a friend at LAX and suddenly thought I was lost. I said goodbye, she hung up (which then automatically hung mine up)and I realized I wasn’t lost, I just wasn’t paying attention.

  21. Troy says:

Season 2 of Torchwood. Sweet. Though I don’t know when the CBC will be airing them since we just saw the finale of Season 1 last night. 🙂

  22. SteveNH says:

You are the only other person I have ever known who likes buttered popcorn jelly beans — my favorite.

  23. ajooja says:

I kind of liked Pirates II, but this last one sucked. If they make another one, I won’t be there.

  24. Bec says:

HEY! Hang on! Are you telling me that you get Torchwood 10 days after it starts here and yet AND YET!!! Heroes Season 2 still doesn’t have an announce date? Grumble whinge unfair grumble moan…

Mind you every other show is running out there, right?

  25. Chad says:

Torchwood would be much better if the actors just didn’t talk. The dialogue is SOOO terrible. I’ve tried watching it a few times but just can’t get past that. And the acting…I gave the actors the benefit of the doubt hoping that they were just trying to force something from the terrible scripts they were given.

  26. Cordrone says:

Grumble grumble… No Firefly… people driving like Reavers… writers still don’t haven’t been handed a deal worth even lookin’ at… both Paris Hilton & American Gladiators still exist PLUS… No Serenity 2… yet! Marmots are so lucky… they can hibernate for 9 months. It’s sounding like a good option at this point.

  27. Wayne says:

I like to speed read. If I just read the bolded headers and put them in a different order, I read your blog entry to basically be a headline:

    Worst Flavorful Driver Winner Terminated

and I wonder to myself — who enters the Worst Flavorful Driver contests anymore, and who was the winner, and what happened to him?
