Elves

Posted on Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Dave!And I'm back home.

Unfortunately, magical elves didn't come in while I was away and pack up Artificial Duck Co. T-shirt orders, so that's what I've been doing for the past five hours. Out of over 320 orders placed, I now have only 108 left to ship. Wheeee. I'm on target for having everything shipped out by the end of the week. Almost.

The mailing tubes for the prints finally arrived this morning, but there's a problem. They were out of stock on the tubes I had ordered, so the supplier called and asked if I could use a tube that was 1-inch SHORTER, which I assumed meant shorter in LENGTH. What they ended up sending were tubes 1-inch shorter in WIDTH. Unfortunately, this curls the prints too much. So I'll be sending 47 orders without their prints, and mailing them separately when the correct tubes come in. It's a bummer, but the last thing I want is for stuff to be ruined before it even arrives, so there you have it.

In the meanwhile, I am beginning to forget what it's like to have a living room, because there are boxes of shirts and pins stacked in every corner...

Daveshirts

Crazy. Why am I doing this again?

And, in news that makes me go "squeee!"...

Robert Smith The Cure

OMG! THE CURE ARE GOING TO TOUR THIS YEAR!!! They'll be in Seattle October 8th. Sweet!

And, in news that's not really news...

Larry King Sucks

Why in the hell does Larry King still have a job? I've never been that impressed with his "interviews," but the ones I've seen lately have just been awful. Horrendously tragically awful. Half the time I get the impression that he doesn't even know who he's interviewing, or even what he's doing there. Tonight he was interviewing Al Gore, so I tuned in to see when the world is ending. At one point Larry was creeping me out, and I couldn't figure out why... until I realized it was because he had turned into Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. It was only for a moment, but I couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the show. And it turns out I'm not the only one who thinks so.

And, in news that makes me want to beat the crap out of somebody...

Monkey Justice

Monkey Justice is never blind... it just closes its eyes when convenient.

I sat on the news of Scooter Libby's prison sentence being commuted by President Bush in the hopes that my all-consuming rage would abate. But it hasn't. WHAT THE BLOODY F#@%?!? Bush had no problem EXECUTING prisoners left and right as governor of Texas, but he considers 30 months in prison to be "excessive" for a criminal convicted of a serious (if not treasonable) offense? How can this be looked at as anything except a strategic move to keep Scooter Libby from testifying at his appeal... and potentially implicating Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, and other top-level administration officials in the crime? What a f#@%ing joke. President Bush said that if anyone in his administration was involved in leaking Valerie Plame's name that they would suffer the consequences. Well, here was his opportunity to live up to his word. Libby was prosecuted by a Republican prosecutor. The judge in the trial was a Republican. The jury was vetted by the Republican defense. "The consequences" of the guilty verdict involved Libby serving 30 months in jail. But not anymore. So much for "suffering the consequences." Next time I have jury duty, I'm just going to vote 100% innocent at any trial I serve on no matter what happens. Why should I bother believing in justice and convicting criminals when a guilty verdict and subsequent sentencing doesn't mean shit to the President of these United States of America?

Just 563 days left...

  1. NYCWD says:

I have to admit… The Cure playing again live has me sorta hyped. I saw them live in the early 90’s, and it was actually very memorable.

Which really just means I got scammed and smoked a bag of ungourmet Oregano.

  2. Hilly says:

Tell me, tell me, tell me how you do that trick…

I think you are putting up with a messy living room cause you love us. See how I keep it happy and positive and don’t mention how much I loathe Bush?

  3. Yippee! I’m so excited I’m going to get my t-shirt soon. I’m disappointed about the prints being delayed, though.

Yeah, Larry King DOES look like Mr. Burns. The man asks the most inane questions. I never have understood his popularity.

I am sick to death of Bush, Cheney, et al. along with the current do-nothing Congress! Bunch of greedy assholes.

  4. kapgar says:

I don’t understand where Bushie gets off either. I’ve heard it’s possibly a tit for tat sort of situation… both protecting each other. But it’s still BS and something that he should not be allowed to get away with.

    What’s Blogoraphy.com TV?

  5. Bre says:

What’s especially baffling to me is that, compared to the public outcry that followed Paris Hilton leaving jail early, you’d think everyone was glad that Libby’s sentence was commuted. And that is a rather sad look at our priorities!

  6. Jeff says:

Maybe I’m oversimplifying it, but since Bush commuted Libby’s sentence shouldn’t every other criminal who has committed perjury or obstruction of justice be set free now as well?

Call me confused, but I just don’t get hypocrisy.

  7. Holmes says:

Wow, I guess I haven’t seen a picture of Robert Smith in a few years. He looks….different. Exceprt for the hair.

I hope this Scooter Libby thing isn’t forgotten by the time election day comes around. It seems like the voting public has a shockingly short memory sometimes.

  8. Wayne says:

What, no comments for the hundred-and-something pardon spree Clinton went on right before end of office? Do you _know_ what some of those people did? And how they were connected to the Clintons? And those were FULL PARDONs, not just commuting of sentence, which Bush did for Libby. He still has $250k fine and probation.

btw, I can’t wait for my shirts! I think I ordered three!

  9. RW says:

Presidents have been taking care of their friends ever since there were Presidents. Lest we forget.

  10. diane says:

Uh, I’m sorry. I was immediately drawn to the photo of Robert Smith and did not get past the news about The Cure touring again!!!
This is a moment that makes me actually go, “Squeeeeee!”

  11. Dave2 says:

Watchdog… The Cure is one of those bands that undoubtedly has an amazing live show, but I’ve never seen them. I hope I get to go!

Hilly… Just the idea of hearing “Pictures of You” live…

Geeky Tai Tai.. Nobody is more excited about you getting your shirt than me… I want my living room back! 🙂

Kapgar… My imaginary television network where real people and cartoons can interact. Much like Roger Rabbit’s Toon Town, I suppose.

Bre… Yes, I hadn’t thought of it, but Paris actually DID serve more jail time than Scooter Libby did. What DOES that say about our priorities?

Jeff… Only if Bush owes them a favori or they can implicate him or his administration in a crime!

Holmes… Dick Cheney for president!! Scooter who-??

Wayne… Why is it Bush supporters excuse everything Bush does by dredging up Clinton? Seriously, I just don’t get it. Scooter Libby’s sentence being commuted has nothing to do with Clinton. It was a decision Bush made, not Clinton, and goes back on his promise that anybody involved with the Valerie Plame incident would suffer the consequences. $250,000 is nothing to wealthy lawyers like Libby, and probation isn’t punishment. This was a stellar opportunity for our President to put his money where his mouth is and he didn’t follow through. How is Clinton’s messed-up presidency supposed to make me feel better about that?

RW… Again,my rant has nothing to do with what other presidents did or didn’t do… I am angered specifically at President Bush for not following up on his promise. Executions? Fine. 30 months in jail? Extreme. WTF?!?

Diane… But first… ERASURE!! Woo hoo!

  12. sizzle says:

um, robert smith? wtf with his look? it’s scary! ok, it was cool back in the day but now…it’s just kind of sad. (said with love because i do adore him so.)

i once had a boss that looked JUST like mr. burns. i would giggle at inopportune times around him for this very reason.

you’re so good to us dave!

  13. lizriz says:

OMG, I cannot wait for my shirts!!!

Now, which one to wear to BlogHer…

  14. Lewis says:

Having a living room is highly overrated anyway. Now, as for having an Elf (or Elves, as the case may dictate)…..they’re fine long as they’re hot and cute. Oh, and if they can pack boxes too, I guess.
PS….I can’t even comment on the Libby deal — What with Paris and all of her troubles and all.

  15. RW says:

Claims of “selective memory” can be shared equally by partisans of the Democrats as well as the Republicans. Whenever anyone gets into this kind of tongue-wagging the wagger must forget what is inconvenient to the stability of the high horse he finds himself perched on. That’s how political discourse runs in this country.

So it’s disingenuous to suggest the outright pardon of blue drug smugglers, blue convicted bank fraud artists, blue people who lied to grand juries, and blue land bandits is somehow not the same as a commutation of the sentence given to a red lying puppet bastard. Both Presidents – all Presidents – promise to uphold the law. President Clinton was known as a “law and order democrat” when the spin-masters were getting him elected the first time. That didn’t stop him from clearing people who were convicted of breaking the law, who happened to be his pals.

I don’t know what’s worse; that Presidents actually do this, or that people act like it is all such a terrible and unique surprise when it happens.

The amount of noise expended on the particulars is directly proportionate to the gored ox du jour, I suppose.

  16. Dave2 says:

Sizzle… Robert Smith has always been scary. It’s just now he’s unintentionally scary, which is just cool!

Lewis… And here I was going to say “magical fairies” when I first wrote this entry!

RW… I am not in any way debating that stuff like this has happened before and, If I was blogging back then, I would most certainly have commented on it regardless of whether it was a Republican or a Democrat in the White House. Nor am I surprised that things like this go on… and have been going on so long as people in power have the ability to abuse it to suit their own ends. What I think is worse than Presidents pardoning drug dealers (or people thinking it’s a unique incident when they do so), is when things like this happen and people don’t talk about it. Past context for today’s transgressions is all well and good, but it doesn’t excuse it… nor make me feel any better about the situation when it happens. Expended noise or justified outrage? Political discourse indeed.

  17. jessica says:

Well that’s dumb. Your supplier should have said that the replacement tubes were 1 inch NARROWER, not SHORTER.

    DUh.

  18. RW says:

Plus we should always remember The Wilcox/McCandlish Law Of Online Discourse Evolution, if Benford’s Law of Controversy will not suffice. Bunch of nazis.

  19. Dave2 says:

    Jessica… That’s what I thought!

RW… I’ve never much subscribed to Benford’s Law of Controversy, and feel that The Wilcox/McCandlish Law of Online Discourse Evolution really only applies when things degenerate to a flame war. Are you planning on starting one?

  20. RW says:

I would answer but I don’t have enough information.

  21. Dave2 says:

Well, I’ve never let that stop ME! 🙂

  22. Rick says:

Conspiracy theory #256: Larry King has been dead for several years, but CNN would fall into bankruptcy without him, so they had him do several hundred greenscreen interviews before he died. They just plug in the celebrity du jour.

  23. Baak says:

Bush’s entire administration is one huge favor factory. That’s the way it’s done in Texas, and it’s creeping into other states the Texans move into. You scratch my back and I’ll get you a job you’re not qualified for. How many times has this come up with the Bushes? Lost count…

  24. Dave2 says:

Rick… ZOMBIE LARRY KING! GAH! Now I’ll have trouble sleeping tonight for sure!

Baak… Well. much like RW says, it’s nothing that’s exclusive to Bush or Republicans, though they do seem to make some really horrifying uses of it (Haliburton, anyone?). Election campaigns run on money. Money comes from people and companies. Those people and companies WILL come to collect a favor one day… it’s pretty much how things work. What bothers me specifically about the Scooter Libby incident is that it is a complete reversal of the attitude that Bush had when he stated anyone in his administration involved would suffer the consequences. I was thrilled that Bush would be holding his people accountable, then totally disillusioned (again) when it turned out not to be true. 🙁

  25. Suzanne says:

What I want to know is what’s wrong with magical elves today??

They’re TOTALLY slacking on their jobs… boxing up your orders, cleaning my house, filing my paperwork, doing my dishes.

How dare they renege on their expected duties! Are they out playing in the sunshine?? LAZY RAT BASTARDS!!

  26. Michelle says:

I think Kapgar was questioning what “blogoraphy” is. b/c you forgot a g.

remember: It’s not just Hollywood. Everyone goes to prison. (but apparently not Washington.)

  27. margalit says:

I’d sell my son to see the Cure again. Favorite band evah! Unfortunately, my son loves them too, and will beg to come with me. What could be more mortifying than to take a 15 year old on a date to see the Cure?

I don’t ever watch Larry King. He totally skeeves me out. There is something inately creepy about him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him interview anyone.

Bush and company are so corrupt, so invincible in their conviction that this is a theocracy and the Christian Right is leading the country with Emperor Georgie as the faux leader and Uncle DICK (was there ever anyone more aptly named?) as the despot in charge. It won’t change one iota, but as they move forward in their destined charge to destroy America and rename is Bush Oil Company, the Republicans in congress are, one by one, becoming more disgusted and less likely to back the executive branch. Me, I’m calling for a double impeachment, right along with Keith Olbermann.

Didn’t ever get around to ordering my shirt. damn.

  28. Avitable says:

You didn’t get the magical elf option when you ordered your shirts? I always do that.

  29. ChillyWilly says:

Dave… you’ve never seen The Cure live?? You have to go… Having seen them several times from 1986 until their last tour that came through Salt Lake (i’d have to to check my ticket stubs from concerts, but I think it was at least 2002).

Each show has been pretty incredible and should not be missed.

Oct 4th is the Salt Lake date. And I will take my digital camera (which I didn’t take with me when I saw The Police last month and the Warped Tour yesterday).

A good live primer is an album called “Paris” which has tons of their older stuff live like “Hundred Years” and “Play For Today”, which are killer songs to hear/see live.
