Troubleshooting

Posted on Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Dave!Well, shit! My Verizon DSL is down at home. AGAIN.

I don't know what pisses me off more... having to waste an hour with technical support when I already know what the issue is... or eventually being told that somebody will look at it when they damn well feel like it (i.e. 24 to 48 hours). What's even worse is that my Verizon DSL account doesn't come with a backup dial-up connection, despite the fact that my local phone service, long-distance phone service, wireless, and DirecTV service are ALL handled by Verizon. That's pretty f#@%ed up.

So now I have to drive into work anytime I want to use the internet, which sucks ass.

Dave Netless Insanity

What worries me is how I start to go insane if I am disconnected from the internet for more than 30 minutes. And it's not as if I don't have anything better to do than sitting around reading blogs and stuff, it's just that my life seems so abnormal when I'm not able to go online any time I want.

Which, of course, is all the time

Crap! Now I have to drive back to work so I can post this. Having an internet addiction blows.

  1. I’m laughing only because I can sooooooo relate. I went on a vacation a year or so ago and was lied to about the place having internet connectivity — well I not only didn’t have have internet connectivity but my cell phone wouldn’t even work in that place. It was HORRIBLE!!! I felt like I had left civilization for a week. I was miserable.

  2. Hilly says:

Okay does the fact that I just said, “awwww, poor Dave” make me just as sick as you are? I’m okay with that if it does.

  3. Weird! I just wrote a post about how much I love being online, inspired by my 14 hour outage last weekend. It really is like being lost in the woods with a flare gun and no flare.

I hope you get connected soon!

  4. lizriz says:

OMG, stay strong, man, stay strong.

  5. Kapha says:

I think you should send your photo collage to Verizon support – they’ll get it fixed once they see the last picture – you look desperate!

  6. Dustin says:

Some people say that when we get to the point where we have cranial implants allowing constant net connection that it will signal man’s darkest age.

Clearly these people have never visited YouTube.

My prayers are with you in your time of need.

  7. borysSNORC says:

Being disconnected is a tragedy of Elizabethan proportions! I hope your pain is short lived Dave and you’re back online soon… as unfortunately the only cure for your current affliction is the speedy restoration of your broadband. Been there… done that. 🙁

  8. sibyl! says:

I LOVE those photos. and even on days when I’m not on the internet at all, it drives me CRAZY if I can’t get on for whatever reason. I’m pretty sure its a control issue with me though…

  9. Anthony says:

Man those photos are scary. 🙂

  10. Avitable says:

That is horrifying! That’s why I pay for business broadband – they do priority repair, sometimes within an hour or two.

  11. Karl says:

I’m getting chills just reading this account. No Internet?! How could I survive? Clearly it’s even worse for you because you’re turning horrific shades of blue and pink!

  12. Tracy Lynn says:

Dude, Verizon fills me with hate.

  13. ajooja says:

I’m in the same boat. My laptop is still dead and I won’t have the time to order a new one until next week.

I have Internet access at home, but no computer. If we weren’t 1,500 miles apart (or whatever) you’d be more than welcome to it.

  14. kilax says:

One day… we will all have reliable, high-speed wireless connections… one day.

Until then, we have a right to be F8CKING PISSED OFF when our internet does not work. 🙂

  15. Jeff says:

    Wow, groovy trip man.

  16. margalit says:

Might I make a suggestion? There is a free netzero dialup option. It totally sucks, and you want to do everything offline and just go online to post something, and it will drive you beserk, but at least you CAN look at the internet (free with popups and lots of bad ads!) from home when your internet is down. I know, crappy option at best, but nevertheless, better than driving to work just to post something.

FIOS FIOS FIOS… someday your FIOS will come!

  17. Lewis says:

I can’t figure out which picture I like the best……the one of you flipping me off is pretty cool…..and I love the colored ones too. You know, my Comcast has never been down for more than a few minutes…and I think that’s only happened maybe once or twice. Sorry!

  18. sizzle says:

i have a similar addiction and have been super frustrated with comcast for, well, forever. since i moved here! the service is shoddy and sometimes i have to pick- tv or internet because the splitter weakens the line and i can’t have both at the same time. and i’m paying how much to be f*&#ed like this!?

    i feel your frustration dave.

  19. bogup says:

What no Comcast in your valley? that does suck. bribe Clearwire to install in your area and screw Verizon.

(PS I’ll wait an hour to seen if gets posted then…)

  20. Dave2 says:

Sweetheart… Yes, well, I have absolutely been there before! And it never seems to be in a cool place where I wouldn’t care about not having internet… it’s always some boring place where I am desperate for it!

Hilly… Yes, it does, but I think we all knew that already! 🙂

Frances… Me too. I loves me my internet!

Liz… I’m trying, but it ain’t easy when you are watching TV and don’t have access to the IMDB!

Kapha… Or disconnect me permanently, it’s hard to tell!

Dustin… Yes! Pray for me! Pray for me and my lost soul… which is connected to the internet, thus lost as well!

borysSNORC… No pills I can take then?

Sibyl… Yeah, but you can always call up Vahid, go to a bar, and forget your troubles! I suppose that I could call Vahid, but I don’t know that I could wait the six hours it would take for him to get here!

Anthony… Much like my life without internet right now. 🙁

Avitable… I live in a podunk town where I am lucky to get DSL at all… let alone BUSINESS DSL. 🙁

Karl… iSight PhotoBooth feels my pain!

Tracy Lynn… They fill me with disappointment. I mean, NO back-up dial-up account for when their DSL goes down? What’s up with that?

Ajooja… Bah, what’s 1500 miles between internet addictions!

Kilax… Well that certainly explains MY mental state! 🙂

Jeff… Apparently you had to be there, because it’s anything BUT groovy without internet!

Margalit… Seriously? Hmmm… I thought they had discontinued that ages ago, but I will certainly look into it, thanks!

Lewis… I wonder if internet through my DirecTV connection is any more reliable? Maybe I should switch back to cable or something. 🙁

Sizzle… Well this is not good. I simply must have television while surfing the internet! Can’t do both at one time?? That would almost be worse than not having internet at all!

Bogup… There is Comcast, but I don’t have cable, so I think it would cost me an arm and a leg. 🙁

  21. kapgar says:

Sorry to hear, man. And I know what it’s like to be addicted. I think Katie would love for it to go dead on me sometime.

  22. Bec says:

That’s the worst thing ever! After being without home broadband for about a thousand years I thought it would take me longer to get addicted this time but… no, here I am mmmm… enjoying every last moment!

Verizon I curse with every last breath.

  23. Troy says:

I read your Facebook status as “Dave is without internet” and thought. Interesting? Though how can you be without internet and still change your status. Now I realize you were using your Mobile Facebook access.

    Stupid me.

  24. I once couldn’t get emails for about 2 weeks and I had this cell phone and was trying to figure out how to get online with the teeny screen and get my emails and I eventually just ended up at the archaic library next to fishermen who were browsing god knows what. I caught one next to me reading my emails over my shoulder. Next time, I will have to do without.

Verizon DSL pretty much stinks, for me anyway…I had it because it was the only thing available in my area when I moved here (I live on an “island” so to speak separated by a bridge) and it was like rats were eating at the wires or something. So sporadic. Thankfully Comcast had just taken residence as well and broadband rocks.

Good thing you have “work” for internet use if you need/have to. Do they have support groups for this sort of thing?

  25. Laurence says:

I have exactely the same mood when Internet doesn’t work !!!
But me, I am not blue or pink !!! I am “verte de rage” (french idiom) 😀

  26. undisciplined says:

Definitely check and see if Comcast will let you have an internet connection sans cable. No TV = no need for cable, so my provider allows me to have a connection without a cable subscription. Only 40 bucks a month! However, I am buried in mailings informing me on how many great deals and programs I’m missing. Boo hoo! 🙂

  27. James says:

My DSL went out one weekend back when i was addicted to Diablo II. I thought I was going to go insane. Maybe I did go crazy and no one has bothered to tell me yet. We’ll see. Just don’t play Diablo II..

  28. Bre says:

I get the same irritated feeling when the students come in and “need me” for some “crisis” while I’m surfing the internet. Don’t they realize I have more important things to do?!

  29. sass says:

those pictures make you look like that “freddy got fingered” guy.

    whateverhisnamewas.

  30. Dave2 says:

    Kapgar… Don’t give Katie any ideas. 🙂

Bec… I’m starting to get there myself… NO CALL FROM VERIZON TODAY and STILL NO INTERNET!!

Troy… Or I go back to work where the internet is actually working. 🙁

Stepping… I suppose that I’m going to have to look into Comcast or something. I have no idea when (or if) my DSL will ever be fixed. 🙁

Laurence… That sounds like a great color for a lipstick!

Undisciplined… Scary, because I pay only $29 a month for DSL. Yet, $40 for something that actually WORKS might be nice!

James… Oooooh! I loved Diablo 2! Oh great, now you’ve gone and put that idea in my head!!

Bre… I dunno… IS there anything more important?

    Sass… Uh… Tom Green? Errrr… thanks?

Pauly… Hmmm… chocolate covered toffee matzo?! Just like Moses used to make, I’ll bet!

Eve… Hey! I’m a first-born son too!! This means I should be able to take the week off after all!

  31. Stacey says:

When my computer crashed a couple years ago I drove 30 minutes to my alma mater every day just to use the computer lab because I couldn’t live without the Internet until the new computer arrived.

  32. jodi says:

it was during my tenure with Verizon DSL that I signed up for a back up dial up account from Netzero.

I don’t miss verizon dsl at all.
