Frak

Posted on Saturday, October 7th, 2006

Dave!I am writing this at 2:30am because of a gross error in judgement while self-medicating.

I have a lingering cough from being sick, so I took some cough syrup. But the cough syrup gives me heartburn, so I took an acid reducer. In order to stop the drainage that's causing the cough I took an antihistamine but, since that keeps me awake, I also took a sleeping pill. I was then worried that the sleeping pill wouldn't be enough to counteract the antihistamine so I also took a couple Excedrin PM which is a pain reliever plus sleep aid (which should also help with my headache). I figured all of those things could battle it out while I sleep, and went to bed at the shockingly early hour of 9:30.

I don't like to take pills but, when I'm sick enough, I apparently have no problem shoving the entire medicine cabinet down my throat.

Anyway, it turns out that the sleeping pills win the battle, but the antihistamines win the war. So here I am wide awake at 2:30am watching the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica on my TiVo while eating a chocolate bar, drinking a glass of milk, and writing in my blog...

Battlestar Galactica

What an amazing show. I am dumbfounded how Battlestar keeps changing so radically each year. More stuff happens in 15 minutes on this program than happens in 15 episodes of Lost. But almost nobody I know watches it because they're "not into science fiction." What a shame, because it's highly entertaining. Educational too, because it's added "frak" to my vocabulary (it's the "profanity of the future!"). Ordinarily this would be a good thing but, because so few people I know are watching, I end up sounding pretty ridiculous whenever I use it. Oh well. It's their loss, because the evil Cylon robots who kill everybody and have now enslaved humanity are so frakin' hot...

Tricia Helfer

Grace Park

Lucy Lawless

Speaking of frak... it would appear that IKEA, the bestest furniture store ever, has discontinued the shelving units I use for my DVDs. I couldn't find it online, and it doesn't help matters that I can't remember the name of the thing. For all I know, it could be called FRAK. But it's probably FITBO or FLARG or FLOOGBANGER or something like that. I once studied a bit of the Swedish language for a trip to Stockholm (only to find out that everybody there speaks better English than I do). You'd think that this would give me an edge in remembering the names of my furniture, but it does not.

Oog. Is it sad that I've been blogging so long that I am able to provide a link to trip I took three years ago?

UPDATE: It's all good. I passed out around 4:00am, then slept until 9:00am. And now I am up and watching the awesome season premiere episode of South Park for the third time, all because Anthony mentioned it in the comments. I think this is now my favorite episode of the show ever, which is amazing considering this is their tenth season!

  1. GΓΆran says:

Holy smokes what a roller coaster cocktail you downed. πŸ™‚

So what do the shelves look like?

You so need to get PajosΒ΄ album 1968! Godammit, itΒ΄s good!

  2. Kyra says:

Wow… um, really Im surprised you didn’t end up in the ER getting your stomach pumped! Good grief!

As for Battlestar – we haven’t watched it yet, but I’m looking forward to it. I just couldn’t stay up last night. But you are right, it seems the only people I know who watch it are in blogland. But, I DID just see an advertisement on the main channels (was it ABC or NBC??) telling everyone to watch the show. So, word HAS to be getting out. πŸ™‚

  3. Anthony says:

I was wondering why there was an entry from you so early. Dude, that’s a lot of meds. I haven’t watched Battlestar Galatica yet, it’s on my “to watch” list at the moment.

I did however just watch the World of Warcraft South Park episode, highly recommended. I don’t play WOW but the episode is very funny.

  4. ssp says:

To me it sounds like you are far too familiar with all those different drugs and their interactions. Heck, I don’t even know all the names you mention.

In my experience the Ikea websites are quite bad and they don’t seem to offer the complete range there (either that or they hide some parts extremely well…) The printed catalogue seems to be much more reliable.

  5. Avitable says:

IKEA is the devil’s workshop. I hate that store!

My HD DVR had issues with SciFi and only recorded a second of the BG promo, so I’ll have to re-record it when it’s rerun later on this week. Frak!

  6. ChillyWilly says:

IKEA…. love that store. And I normally go to the one in Costa Mesa, CA to get my things. But they are building one here in Salt Lake valley, which will be open sometime next year.

I’ve got the same problem with some CD shelves I’ve bought. I’m now in the need of a third one and they’ve discontiued them. So now I have to rethink my CD storage plans. Adding a third shelf that doesn’t match could prove to be a major challenge.

  7. Jenny says:

Ugh – sorry to hear your cold is still lingering. But I do like that you’re channeling Elvis with your uppers/downers drug combos. Now where’s that ‘lil Bloated Elvis Dave? I know you’ve done an illustration like that before…

Hope you get rid of that frakkin’ cold!

  8. diane says:

Geez Dave, you’re lucky you’re not dead!! Moreover, I can’t believe you couldn’t sleep after all that. Too bad you didn’t have any Vicodin lying around the house. I have some leftover from injury past and they are my “desperate times call for desperate measures” go-to.
I have been hearing Battlestar is awesome–and I would watch it, except I’m afraid if I broke down and finally got cable I’d never leave the house. πŸ™

  9. Christie says:

Good grief, if I took drugs like that I would be out cold for two days.

I had the same problem with a set of bookshelves from IKEA. I needed a third set for more books, but the style was discontinued. The store in Seattle was great! They searched till they found a set in California and even paid the shipping to get it up here.

Battlestar Galactica….best…show…ever! I ended up watching it twice last night. Together with Doctor Who, it’s a perfect Friday night. Frakin’ awesome!

  10. Erin says:

FLOOGBANGER – sounds way too dirty to be a DVD shelving unit.

  11. Dave2 says:

GΓΆran… They are pretty simple. It’s just a board with shelves sticking out and a metal wire on the edges to hold in the DVDs. It’s so brilliant because it takes up almost no space. You just screw it to the wall…

    Ikea Shelves

Kyra… Even Veronica Mars is pimping the show now! I hope they wrap up this “occupation” storyline soon.

Anthony… I totally agree! South Park’s season premiere was classic. It was pretty cool of Blizzard to help out.

SSP… I’m going to go to Seattle in a few weeks, and I’m going to drop by the store and see.

Avitable… Really? I (heart) Ikea. I’m not a fan of everything they make, but some of their stuff is elegant, simple, and functional in a way that other furniture just isn’t. I love their picture frames.

ChillyWilly… I hear that. I’ll be sad if my new shelving doesn’t match the stuff I have now. πŸ™

Jenny… Ah, but I have done an Elvis Lil’ Dave!

Diane… Eh, what’s so good about the outside world anyway? πŸ™‚

Christie… I will absolutely check with the Seattle IKEA when I’m there in a few weeks. Hopefully they can track some down for me.

    Erin… Hmmm… maybe it’s BONGFLOOGER then?

  12. Laurence says:

Wow, when you practice self medicating, you do it in depth !!!
But Series TV + chocolate bar + glass of milk + writing blog = a very, VERY good sleep’s alternative !

When I was writing my comments, you posted your answers…
And WOW, nice DVD collection… What is the serie with orange dust cover ?

Your shelve remind me what a woman humorist said to a journalist…
The journalist… what do you do if ones announces to you the end of the world in 1 hour ?
    Her : I don’t know… I’ll try to assemble a Ikea’s DVD shelve !

  13. Dave2 says:

That would be Star Trek: The ORIGINAL Series in the orange cases. The REAL Star Trek.

  14. Laurence says:

Ah ! If it is the real, real Star Trek, c’est juste le meilleur ! πŸ™‚

  15. Hilly says:

Hey but how cool was is when Veronica Mars said, “frak”? Shawn and I bought “frak off” tshirts, heh.

So this was your fave episode of South Park, ever? The WoW one? Hrm, I feel humbly impressed and honored, for my hubby of course, not me. I loved seeing how they portrayed the boys at Blizzard…no NOT.

  16. Dave2 says:

Ah, but did you notice that the guys at Blizzard were the only ones involved that “had lives” – sweet! πŸ™‚

  17. amanda says:

Glad to know that you are feeling a little better. Take it easy!

  18. Hilly says:

LMAO, which is actually the one true aspect of how they portrayed them. I had to laugh because Blizzard is so hidden away but of course, Matt and Trey went over the top with Blizzard logos everywhere.

Someone asked me which one was my husband, and I told them “no one in THAT room….he’s been away, playing with the boys at Upper Deck ;)”.

  19. Mooselet says:

FLOOGBANGER is totally the name of my next band.

And ease up on the drugs, would ya? Geez… Most sleeping pills are antihistamines, so I’m surprised you aren’t in a coma.

  20. Kyra says:

See, I don’t watch veronica mars (I know, you hate me now)… I hear you all talk about it, but the couple of times I have watched it…well.. I couldn’t get into it.

Oh, on the BG line – I have one question too. All the cylon women are these walking barbie dolls as you so eloquently illustrated. But all the cylon men are slugs and weasles… why is THAT? Men can fantasize over a robotic women, but women get stuck with those polyster suit wearing greasy weasles instead?

I’m contemplating launching an official protest. πŸ˜‰

  21. Michelle says:

Ha! My buddy from work uses ‘frak’ as a profanity all the time! Now i know where he gets it from!

  22. *lynne* says:

I remember catching something of the “new” BSG and laughing at the use of “frak” since I was used to the Babylon 5 version: FRAG… having Delenn say “abso-fraggin-lutely” to Capt Sheridan is one of my fave scenes, LOL!

  23. Avitable says:

I hate their stores. They’re impossible to navigate, and while their shelving might be neat, I think places like Wood Elm (I think it’s called) and Chiasso have cleaner styles that are of much higher quality.

It just feels like something I’d own in college.

  24. delmer says:

The Cylons are a lot better looking that those in the original series. Even Lorne Greene would find himself helpless to this lot.

  25. Eve says:

First of all, all of the original Trek? You lucky bastard!

Second, that is one hot ass on Boomer, oh crap. I mean, I normally don’t notice/care about other chicks’ asses, but DAG!

Last, feel better already! You have to be in top form for all the spam and other various email harassments πŸ˜‰

  26. Kapha says:

Are they better shots than the originals? Always cracked me up that it took three of them to pilot one of those little ships (must have strong Cylon Unions back on the homeworld). Then again, maybe there was something in their contract stipulating they had to hit each other’s shots and make it look like they were trying so they could keep coming back for more (and hence continue working).

Or maybe it was that wandering eye designed into them (that was cool btw) – hard to hit something when your eye (note: *single eye* hence no 3D vision in the first place) keeps zooming back and forth scanning everything.

Dave: Your DVD collection rocks – simply because it contains *the* only true Star Trek series.

You should pick up a copy of “The Nitpicker’s Guide to Classic Star Trek” – awesome stuff. ;D

P.S. I got Pink Spock when I did the Preview of this – ha! πŸ˜€

  27. Phil Welch says:

Actually, I think IKEA does sell (or used to sell) a “FRAK” shaving mirror. (Coincidence, not homage). It appeared on the show in the first episode, in the scene where Adama cuts himself shaving.

  28. kilax says:

    Hope you feel better soon!

  29. Avitable says:

Finally saw the premiere of BG:

    I was pretty disappointed, actually.

Now that “frak” is a popular pop-culture world, every single person in the show uses it every other word. Even people like Adama, which makes no sense.

The fat suit on Apollo looked ludicrously cheesy.

Starbuck is a solider – she acted like a pussy.

There were a couple of cool scenes, but then the “next week” previews ruined the suspense of who might have died and who might have lived at the execution.

The last 20 minutes were the best part, but none of it was stupendous.

  30. Javajabber says:

I watch Battlestar and both Stargates. I read Asimov and Analog (subscriber).

I did watch the premier episode of Battlestar today (after watching “Battlestar So Far.”

I hope God doesn’t damn me to hell because I watched it instead of going to church this morning. He didn’t let me win the lottery last night so He got his due.

Anyway, the word “frak.” They only said it a gazillion times … but I loved it anyway!

The only thing that would make it perfect that you watch Battlestar is if you were female. Oh well, we can’t have everything.

And Dave, lay off the drug cocktails. I really look forward to reading your blog. Get my drift?

    :^)

  31. Lela says:

Glad you’re still with us–I hope you up your water intake for a couple of days and flush out your system! Feel better πŸ™‚

  32. Jeff says:

I continue to be blown away by how consistently funny South Park is. Parker and Stone have found an original and successful formula and have managed to not screw it up over time.

  33. nancycle says:

Hard to say why your heart might have been beating so rapidly…the drugs or the research photos!

  34. claire says:

BSG is pretty amazing. I wasn’t sure I’d care for it after the season 2 finale, but I was very impressed with the premiere.

  35. Pauly D says:

Um, this post was amazing, especially since you posted a picture of Grace Park that I had never seen before. Wow.

As for the premiere (the two hour premiere) — the show just continues to reinvent itself and I totally agree regarding the Lost comment. So much happens in such a short amount of time on BSG that you can’t miss a minute.

It’s just too bad that by mentioning BSG, people who don’t watch it sort of laugh.

That being said, it looks like David Eick (co-EP of BSG) just made a deal to bring The Bionic Woman back to TV. I can only imagine how great that will be.

  36. SJ says:

Sweet holy God, that shot of Grace Park is H-O-T.

I love BG, but I’m not crazy about this whole New Caprica storyline. Get back on the damn ships!

And yeah! Where *are* all the studly Cylons?

  37. Wayne Hall says:

I love catching up on my Davemania addiction.

For me, it’s Doan’s PM. MAYBE Nyquil at the same, but that’s it. That combination is a woder drug for me that I indulge about every year or so, and it’s about the only non-food chemical I take. I take those two concoctions adn I get all the sleep and wellness I need in about 5-6 hours.

That WoW Southpark episode is absolutely my favorite ever (Scott Tenorman Must Die is my favorite) and I kind of thought… “hey, this is a great episode, they weren’t anywhere near as gross or offensive as they usually are, and it was actually a great story” and then I thought “hey, maybe I should be worried that I’m so desensitized that I thought SouthPark was a little tamer than usual”.

I’ve never seen BSG. Strange, I know. I’m a die-hard fan of StarGate (both SG-1 and Atlantis) and barely have time for another show to invest myself in. Because, really… I have to invest myself in whatever show I watch. i’m not a casual watcher. But, a co-worker *just* lent me BSG Season 1 including miniseries so I could give it a try. I’m also the kind of person where I don’t want to join in halfway through the season. So now I gotta go through a few dozen episodes if I like the miniseries.

  38. zoe says:

I think the ikea shelf you’re talking about incorporated the Eckby Wall rail, the FASTBO side rails and wood shelving?
