Cherry

Posted on Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

Dave!I wish I knew what I have against cherries and cherry-flavored foods.

I'd like to blame it on the fact that I spent hot summer days in a smelly orchard picking cherries for back-to-school money when I was younger, but I never really cared for them before that. Cherries are just one of those things I dislike for no particular reason, and I haven't a clue as to why. Sure I loathe broccoli and cauliflower and stuff, but there is a very good reason for disliking them because they are ugly, smelly, taste gross, and make you fart.

But cherries?

They are pretty, sweet-smelling, assumably fart-free, and everybody else seems to love them...

Cherry

The problem with disliking cherries is that you end up wasting a lot of edibles because almost every fruit assortment is assured of having cherry in it. When I buy a case of popsicles from the Schwan man, I end up with yummy orange, delicious grape, and a butt-load of gross cherry I have to try and give away. Buy a carton of Tootsie Pops, and it's the same way. Even a pack of Starburst Fruit Chews has me tossing a handful of candy out because of those freaky pink cherry squares.

Yes, life would be much better if I could get over my aversion to cherries. Instead I just become more freaked out during July and August because everywhere you go in the valley people are picking, selling, and eating cherries. It's cherries everywhere, and even when you don't seem them, there's always cherry pits that people have spit out into the gutters or dumped in a parking lot or something. A constant reminder of those yucky little red fruits.

The good news is that cherry season here in Washington State seems to finally be falling off. Soon, no longer will I be assaulted by bins of cherries when I enter the grocery store. People sucking on cherry stems and spitting out pits will be a much rarer sight. Cherries will slowly start to disappear and the world will eventually go back to normal.

Until next year.

  1. Lore says:

I like cherries, but hate cherry-flavored products.

I wish I lived in Washington.

  2. kilax says:

I am not sure what it is about the graphic today, but I love it! It looks like the cherries could come alive and attack at any moment!

  3. *lynne* says:

I hear ya, Dave! For the longest time I just. could. not. stand. cherries! But I know the reason – my only exposure to cherries when younger was limited to those nasty maraschino cherries that top every blob of whipped cream that tops a dessert of ice cream or whatever. Ugh. Horrid things! I think it was only in 1999 did I try a real fresh cherry and discover that it actually tasted nice! I’ve been in the other camp ever since.

  4. See, I don’t eat anything flavored red. Red can include cherry or strawberry or any other flavor, but if it’s “red flavored”, I’m not touching it. Yellow, too.

  5. Laurence says:

I want to play on words but it only works in French.
“Quoi ? Tu n’aime pas les cerises. C’est la cerise sur le gâteau !!!”
“What ? You don’t like cherries. That’s the icing on the cake !!!”

What ? You didn’t laugh ? Ok, I have a question : And Neneh Cherry, you like ?

Ok, ok, you have the right not to laugh. When I try to be funny, I am not… Oh, no, I hate cherries now… 😉

  6. sandra says:

I understand completely. I feel the same way about oranges and definitely wish I didn’t…mostly because it just looks like so much fun to do that “look! it’s my teeth…but an orange peel” trick.

  7. Kevin says:

Hey, if you wanna unload some cherry-enhanced goodness, you have my address. We’ll work something out through PayPal.

  8. Ariana says:

Kilax’s comment cracks me up. You certainly do look troubled by those giant cherries.

  9. MRKisThatKid says:

Your a vegetarian and you don’t like broccoli or cauliflower? What do you actually eat other than snack foods?

I’m afraid i’m another cherry lover, when-ether there’s a fruit bowl with fresh cherry’s in it I dive right in! The other fruits don’t even get a look in.

My peeve in the fruit world is strawberry’s, they don’t do a thing for me and yet everyone else is like “OOooh Strawberry’s… what a rare treat!”

  10. Hilly says:

I have the same issue with strawberries, except my biggest problem with it is defending myself every time I tell people that I hate strawberries.

Seriously, they gasp as if I told them that I was an assasin or something….Snackiepoo, The Great Fruit Assasin.

  11. Tonya says:

I am blissfully indifferent about cherries. I never seek them out (and don’t think I’ve ever asked for “cherry” flavor of anything), but I shrug and muddle through if I end up with them.

Ryan, on the other hand, CANNOT STAND cherries. The human garbage disposal himself, bothered by no other fruit or vegetable, will not go within two feet of cherry anything if he can help it.

  12. Dave2 says:

Lore… If you like cherries, then Washington during the months of June and July is for you!

Kilax… YES! YES, THAT IS EXACTLY RIGHT! ATTACK CHERRIES!! Spewing their pits everywhere… that’s what I am talking about.

Lynne… Believe me, I’ve tried to like cherries but I just can’t. Not even in pie. AND I LOVES ME THE PIE!! 🙁

Kentucky… No Red Vines licorice? That’s almost sad! Everybody loves the Red Vines licorice!! 🙂

Laurence… I am not so much a fan of Neneh Cherry, but her brother(?) Eagle-Eye Cherry is an amazing musician.

Sandra… I don’t like eating orange fruit, but loves me the orange popsicles and candies!

Kevin… I’ll put a carton of cherry popsicles in the mail to you.

Ariana… That’s pretty much the same face I have when I see cherries in real-life too!

MRK… Junk food is pretty much my diet, yes. But I do eat an occasional salad, and enjoy taco pizza. And apples. You can’t live in Washington and not like apples. Oooooh! Strawberry! They are not exactly rare (as the neighboring state of Oregon has some of the best in the world) but it’s hard to find good-tasting ones outside the summer months. I think that’s because they import from South America during the winter months, and some of the flavor gets lost in transit?

Hilly… Boy another strawberry-hater. I loves the strawberries. Fresh strawberries that have been sliced and sprinkled with sugar is better than ice cream to me! Okay, I lie. Not actually better than ice cream… but pretty darn good just the same.

Tonya… Disliking cherries must be a trait shared by geniuses. I would not be the least bit surprised to find out that Einstein loathed cherries as well. So see, Ryan is in good company with myself and Einstein!

  13. Mocha says:

As a cherry-LOVER, I certainly hope those cherries DO come alive and kick your ass for such blasphemy, Dave.

  14. Marti says:

In quitting smoking, I used Tootsie Roll Pops as my oral fixation substitute.

I wrote the makers of those Tootsie Pops and asked them where I could buy JUST the cherry flavored ones.

I know that will probably gross you out, but it’s the truth.

It’s too bad you live 3,000 miles away. I sure could use all those cherry pops !!!

  15. ‘Specially not Red Vines. Why would I eat plastic? heee

  16. Mooselet says:

I don’t usually eat fresh cherries as they are so expensive here, plus I hate spitting out the pits. I’ll eat cherries in fruit salad or in ice cream or just about anywhere else though. Only fruit I won’t touch are mangos – ick!

  17. Avitable says:

    Cherries on sundaes are yummmmmmmmmmm.

  18. adena says:

I hate cherry flavored stuff, even candy, and believe me…Me hating candy is a rare, rare thing.

I don’t mind fresh cherries, but I can’t eat them, because for some reason, they make my lips numb. And that’s very disconcerting. No one wants numb lips. 🙂

  19. Mrs RW says:

Oh, to think I could’ve had a cherry connection and now it’s too late (boo-hoo). Mountains of cherries wouldn’t be enough. They are the BEST!

  20. Kevin says:

How did I know that would be your response?

  21. apricoco says:

I am with you on the cherry thing. I hate, hate, hate cherries! I don’t like anything cherry flavored as well. On the other hand, I love grapes, but not anything grape flvored. Same goes for chocolate, like it. Nothing chocolate flavored.

  22. nicole says:

Let’s set up a swap. Since you hate cherry and I hate grape, I’ll send you all my grape starbusts and whatnot and you send me the cherry ones. 😉

Oh and isn’t it the red starbursts that are cherry? The pink ones are strawberry I thought. I’m too lazy to check.

  23. marie b. says:

I hate cherries and cherry-flavoured products with a passion. Hate them.

I wonder if the fact that most of my online handles have the word “Cherry” in them somewhere is some weird facet to that. Hm.

  24. adena says:

    Oh, speaking of apples…

Have you ever tried a “Grapple”?

It’s a Fuji apple that they’ve dipped(?) in grape juice for some amount of time, or something. They come in packs of 4. I was intrigued w/ the idea….Grape-Apple. So, I bought a pack.

OMG, those things are like crack! SO good!

  25. Mist 1 says:

I’ll share candy with you anytime. I’ll take the cherry if you’ll eat the grape.

  26. Chase says:

My LORD, I agree 100%. Nasty cherry stuff. Real, fake, I don’t care. Yuck.

    (heh. cherry.)

  27. Laci says:

I’m totally weird in that I like cherry-flavored stuff like candy and popsicles, but I don’t like cherries themselves.

  28. tigerjoe says:

I thought you liked cherry coke?

Perhaps my memory is failing me, or perhaps cherry coke was justa passing fancy…

  29. yellojkt says:

    I

Too many cherries do have the the effect on the digestive system most other fruits had, so moderation is encouraged, but you are welcome to send me all the cherries you don’t want.

  30. Kyra says:

Hmmm… I do like fresh cherries, but I have no inclination towards ANYTHING cherry-flavored. *blecht!* (not chocolate, not worth it!) 😉

  31. Bre says:

I’m the complete opposite. I leave the orange and green “flavors” in the boxes of fruit snacks or ice pops in favor of cherry and grape. You can have them. Seriously. They won’t melt too badly in transit!

  32. Randy says:

    I just got a BIG container (4 lbs.) of cherries from a well-known Kirkland based warehouse-type store…

They are Washington Cherries–sweet cherries (“cerises douces”)–Stemlit, World Famous Cherries, from WENATCHEE, WA!!!–COOOL!

Dave, I don’t notice that these have any hint of bad smell…They are, in fact, very tasty.

  33. ms. sizzle says:

i’m picky about the fruit i eat but cherries are one i enjoy. minus the whole pit spit part. so unladylike. but i don’t like cherry flavored things, just cherries. weird.

  34. ChillyWilly says:

Cherries are my absolute favorite… pretty much anything cherry I like. There are some things that are cherry-flavored that have gone wrong, but for the most part, it’s my favorite fruit.

    Raspberries are a close second.

Interesting to see how many people like the flavor but hate the fruit or vise versa.

  35. sultana says:

Cherry Coke is my favorite cola. I’m with you on the cherry-flavored cadies though. BLECH!

  36. lol – we’d make a fine pair. I don’t buy Tootsie Pops anymore because I ONLY like the cherry flavored ones and I end up pitching the rest. have you noticed that their chocolate flavored Tootsie Pop is more like ass flavor? ughh.

  37. Karl says:

    Cherries. Yum. Strawberries. Meh.

  38. Anonymous says:

Perhaps it’s because they look like butts. Little, shiny, red butts. No comment about the stems…

How do you feel about peaches?

  39. Epona says:

I love cherry-flavored stuff! It’s my favorite next to “blue” or apple.

Hate grape-flavored stuff, though. All of it. Except for real grapes, I like real grapes.

  40. I hate raspberries, and they’ve become just as popular as cherries!
