Mistress

Posted on Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Dave!Today was mostly work, but big fun was to be had this evening. That's because I was able to have dinner at the new Times Square Hard Rock Cafe with Dave3 and the Mistress of Metal herself... The Empress Eve!

Meeting up with fellow bloggers I read is always cool... but in this case it was particularly special because Dave3 and Eve are comic book geeks just like me. This is a pleasant change from my usual scene, because the small town where I live doesn't have much of a geek subculture to speak of.

Anyway, dinner was a blast, and reminds me once again that having to travel so much is not always a bad thing. I actually look forward to it when I know that cool people like Eve and Dave3 are waiting for me. It also makes me wonder why bloggers don't meet up more often, because every single time I've been able to see people in "real life," it's been totally sweet.

As if that wasn't enough, the Hard Rock is pretty spiffy...

The cafe itself is actually underground. That's because the Paramount Hotel that sits above it is being transformed into New York's very own Hard Rock Hotel. It's a nice property though, with plenty of open space...

And, since the Mistress of Metal was in attendance, her beloved Slayer was representing on the memorabilia wall...

Sadly, I had to get back to the hotel after dinner so I could try and solve my hotel's shitty internet problems and get back to work... but at least I got to meet Dave3 and Eve at last, so the day ended up being a good one after all.

At least until I found out that Superman is whoring himself out for Diet Pepsi...

Super Diet

Yeah, as if Superman needs to count calories. Doesn't everybody know that Superman's super-metabolism (which is fueled by the Earth's yellow sun) means that he doesn't have to diet? Well, unless he was exposed to Red Kryptonite and it made him super overweight. Or perhaps if Mxyzptlk used his 5th-Dimension magic to make him gain weight. Or maybe if he was a Superman from an alternate earth where all the characters have the opposite physique of their Earth-1 Counterparts (which, of course, would have to pre-date Crisis on Infinite Earths, for obvious reasons). Or I suppose it could even be because... oh... uhhhh... sorry, I must still be in Super-Geek mode.

Bleh.

Do you know how hard it is to be in a city like New York and have to work all day long? Oh well, I can always go look through my old pictures while I work and pretend I'm not working.

Alas, I was a Marvel guy and disdained Superman as vapid and without the soul showed by Lee, Kirby and Ditko with Peter Parker’s angst and The Thing’s soft heart.

Plus I had Fantastic Four #1-7 but they all got tossed. It took me years to recover.

Stop talking about comic books damn you…

  2. Karl says:

Sounds like you had a good time today, even if they are working you to death (again). And how the hell is it that you’re supposed to solve the hotel’s internet problems? Isn’t that THEIR job?

  3. ms. sizzle says:

meeting bloggers is sweet. stupid internet problems! i am with karl- isn’t that the hotel’s problem!?

  4. ChillyWilly says:

NYC is such a cool place. It’s been way too long since I’ve been there. I don’t think I can wait 2 more years for my 45th to make it back. Your pictures are making me jealous.

Have fun and post more pics.

  5. Eve says:

Here’s my take, with photos: Rock.

I had tons o’ fun!!!!! Come back soon.

  6. Belinda says:

Hey, you’re right! That is a meritorious argument (much better than that lame Seinfeld bit about Superman having “super-humor.”) indeed. It seems to me that Superman would not only not need to diet, but that he’d have to consume a Super-LOT of calories! I mean, he’d be like a hummingbird here under the yellow sun of earth, right?

    Dave, you’re a genius.

  7. undisciplined says:

Bizarro is diligent about limiting his carb intake.

  8. EDDIE says:

How many Daves and Eves in this world?

In modern usage, the term can be applied without respect to the inteligence of the subject, but it has classically referred to those of subaverage intellect, an exception being when”dork” is used as synonym for “nerd” and/or “geek”. In that situation, high-intelligence (often of the bookish sort) but low social functioning is often indicated.

  9. Michelle says:

Your day sounded awsome! I’m wondering though, what’s your favourite all-time comic or favourite comics (if you have too many favourites to have just one)? My boyfriend is just introducing me to comics so I’m too new to actually have a favourite, but I’m really enjoying Elektra Assasin, the Marvel Knights Spiderman series and Transmetropolitan. They’s great =D

  10. Kevin says:

And I thought I was geeky when I suggested to Karl that he have a custom T-shirt printed for his upcoming comic-con that reads “The PT Rocks the OT!” Yeah, you got me beat.

  11. Avitable says:

That super-geeking out was awesome. Well done.

  12. Bec says:

    Superman is a coke drinker.
He’s from smalltown America and (this fact is from my extensive research from many years of watching movies) all good people from smalltown America are Coke drinkers.
    Pepsi… ugh…

  13. Mocha says:

No hotel internet? I say we report them. That’s so so so so wrong.

Stop knocking the Super Geek mode. It’s Super Sexy. 😉

  14. Jakwee says:

Ooooh, you’re getting me all excited for my big NYC trip. Wish there were some bloggers to meet up with. Maybe next time.

I can’t believe Superman sold out! (sigh)

  15. It is totally apparent to me that that Diet Pepsi sign, much like their products, sucks, and is trying to fall and crush the people below. Superman is not whoring it out, he’s simply replacing the sign so it does not squish mankind like an ant. 😉

  16. Wayne Hall says:

I saw a commercial recently where a geek was saying something like ‘The difference between nerds and geeks is that geeks _do stuff_ with their knowledge’. I agree with that – nerds are in school and geeks hack stuff out. I happily proclaim myself a geek for this reason. 3 of my neices and nephews actually call me ‘uncle waynegeek’ instead of Uncle Wayne. And I mean as if it’s my name… Every single time.

And Slayer at La Zona Rosa must’ve been ‘interesting’. That place is more apt to have blues rock than metal… Altho I did see DRI, s.o.d. and Metal Church when they came to town not too far away from there 🙂

  17. Carl says:

As a Hard Rock devotee, what’s your take on the owner selling the chain of cafes so that they may concentrate on casinos? Could be some changes, good or bad?

Also, did you note the groundbreaking of a Hard Rock theme park at Myrtle Beach?!?

  18. alica says:

    very nice
