Dave! The very definition of irony: Crunching numbers with Microsoft Excel this morning and having the program crash on me. This triggers the "Microsoft Crash Reporter" which, big surprise, immediately crashes. Oddly enough, there was no crash reporter for the crash reporter. I guess when the crash reporter fails, you're on your own. My guess is Microsoft wouldn't have it any other way. After all, if MS Office crashes and there's nobody to report it... did it really crash at all?

This was pretty much an early indicator of how my entire day would go.

And how it would end.

Right now I am sitting down to dinner after a long day at work. Earlier I was having an email conversation with Kevin about Chicago when Giordano's Pizza came up. This delicious Chicago institution makes a mighty fine pie, and I was more than a little jealous that Kevin and his wife were getting to eat there tonight.

And all day long I couldn't get Giordano's Pizza out of my mind...

Giordano's Pizza

So when I finally got home, I decided to have pizza. And since Giordano's was a 2000 mile drive and 28 hours away, I had no choice but to pop a Cheese Pizza Hot Pocket in the microwave...

Dave Dinner

It's not quite the same experience.

But then again, a Hot Pocket is not quite pizza.

I decided to make up for it by having a glass of Orange Kool-Aid with a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup and a U-NO bar for dessert. Delicious!

Okay, not really. It's actually a pretty sad little dinner isn't it?

But don't feel sorry for me. Oh no. No tears in my Kool-Aid tonight. In just 21 days I'll be able to have a real Giordano's pizza all my own. w00t! (If you want to cheer me up in the meanwhile, why not stop by the Blogography Reader's Map and add a pin if you haven't already?).

I’ve only been to Chicago once before, but I vividly remember eating at Giordano’s. At the time, however, I did not realize it was such an establishment though I did find the pizza to be outstanding (this from someone who is not a huge fan of pizza).

Thanks to your picture, I’ve been instilled with a strong craving for Giordano’s which I’m sure will go unsatisfied for quite some time. My only real hope satiating that desire anytime soon would be visiting one of Giordano’s FL locations (although, I don’t know if it’d be the same). I think my current disposition can best be described by paraphrasing Homer (and not the classical writer), “Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….. Giordano’s!”

  2. Kimono says:

Yes, I miss Chicago’s famous pizza. Unfortunately, in Japan, I can not find the pizza shop where I can eat stuffed pizza.

  3. karla says:

That’s the saddest little dinner I’ve ever seen. Poor poor Dave. Sometimes I miss the plethora of frozen “gunch” food that one can acquire in the US, as there is NONE of that here, but seeing your hot pocket reminds me of that particular rubbery/chewy/ texture that then burns the top layer of your mouth off in the first bite and I am not so nostalgic anymore.

“Cept maybe for tater tots. And the once a year corny dog.

  4. MRKisThatKid says:

You really are pushing that map thing of yours, I’m wondering do you get a pretty badge or something if you get someone on in each country or something?

Hey look I have a friend in sunny sheffield, hello Matt. Hmm, frappr seems to have plonked me in the middle of the uni whilst matt’s fallen into a river. Poor thing.

  5. Alexis says:

Ho’crap, look at the size of that mother! I’ve never seen anything like it…

Although, I’m told by my New Yorker friend Gary that Chicago pizza is an abomination (and that I’m crazy for specifically ordering my equally abominable West Coast pizza with “so much cheese that the crust doesn’t bake all the way through the middle”).

  6. Pauly D says:

Okay. Get this: my wife grew up on Giordano’s pizza that when she met me (a guy who thought PIzza Hut Deep Dish was the best pizza ever) she had Giordano’s sent us pizza halfway across the country for a special occasion. Did you know they do that? For a price, they ship them half cooked in dry ice — then you finish the job at home in the oven. Works awesome, and you get that amazing Giordano’s pizza.

Mmm, can’t wait till Christmas to get back to Chi-town and eat myself up some of that goodness.

  7. I think my ass got fatter just from looking at that delicious slice of pizza.

  8. Kevin says:

Dave, you’re gonna be here at the end of the month, buddy. Maybe we can get some pizza in!!! What’s your take on the spinach version I suggested? Mmmmmm… yummy!

Actually, I think pizza may be tomorrow night (Thursday). I just hope Katie gets over whatever ailment has recently crept inside her. She feels like the floor of a taxi cab. And, to make things worse, she has to go to work regardless because the only person that could replace her is on vacation this week. That sucks.

  9. sandra says:

I think I actually salivated while looking at the pizza photo (food porn?)…I lived in Chicago for a few years and was just four short blocks from a Giordano’s, and I have just realized that I did not eat nearly enough pizza while living there.

Re: Hot Pocket eating – have you ever seen a comic named Jim Gaffigan? He does a whole bit on Hot Pockets that makes me laugh every time I pass them in the grocery store.

  10. Dave2 says:

Oh now that’s just great… yet another clever blog name I should have thought of… Internal Monoblog!! D’oh!

I don’t know of Jim Gaffigan. But anybody who finds Hot Pockets funny is okay in my book!

Hmmm… I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the number of people commenting here who have eaten at Giordano’s, yet somehow I am. Oh well, it’s 20 days and counting before I get to have a Giordano’s experience all my own.

  11. Belinda says:

OK, I just have to know–HAVE TO–if the word “asploded” came to you, as it did to us, from an episode of “Late Night With David Letterman” years ago, in which Vinnie Testeverde said of Jay Thomas’ hitting the pastrami sandwich off the top of the Christmas tree with a football, “He made the samwich asPLODE!”

Alex and I laugh to this day if we even think about it, and often speak of things “asploding.”

You are the best. Totally worthy of Pauly, never fear.

  12. Dave2 says:

I have no idea where I heard it. But it was quite along time ago, because I’ve been using it for at least a decade. “Asploded” sounds so much more destructive don’t you think?

  13. Belinda says:

Well, it does sound hilarious if you do it in Vinnie T.’s voice. And it probably was that long ago that the episode aired originally. I thought I would die laughing, and of course Dave did Vinnie impressions for weeks afterward about things “asploding.” Between that and the biohazard Kool-Aid, I nearly ruined my bad monkey.

  14. Tinapopo says:

My best friend moved to Chicago 7 years ago and has effectively gotten me hooked on Giordano’s. You absolutely can have them ship it to you, as I do every year on my birthday. And also probably today, as I have a hella big craving for it right now.
