This is the USA?

Posted on Friday, April 9th, 2004

Dave! What in the hell is going on? Last time I checked, the first amendment of the Bill of Rights from the Constitution of the United States of America ensures freedom of speech for all its citizens. Apparently, this is only true if you support the ever-growing "public decency" madness propagated by the increasingly scary Bush administration. It does not apply to people like Howard Stern who are critical of it.

DAVETOON: Lil' Dave in Janet Jackson's Super Bowl outfit with his nipple exposed.

In shocking, but unsurprising news, Howard Stern has been fired. His show is the same as it's always been... vulgar, offensive, and loaded with sex... but all of a sudden it's no longer acceptable to air on public airwaves. It's a-okay for Oprah to discuss rim-jobs and rainbow party oral sex on her television show without penalty, but Stern gets fined and fired?

WTF mate?

HELPFUL HINT: if you find something on the radio objectional or offensive, you can change the f#@%ing channel or turn the blasted thing off! Not everybody has the same morals or tastes in entertainment as you. Some folks actually enjoy listening to that kind of thing. This being America and all, people should be entitled to listen to Stern even if you happen hate him.

Where does this end? Will it ever end? How long before the movies I love, the books I enjoy, the television shows I watch... how long before they are taken away?

Dude, do u seriously listen 2 Howard Stern?!?!
Oprah, says it in a nice way, plus, she’s a woman; I don’t know about u, but I’m a girl, and I don’t want Howard Stern 2 go on air talking about banging me! 🙁 Howard Stern doesn’t CARE about what he talks about, he just says shit to piss off the suits @ the FCC. That’s how he’s made his fortune.
I don’t care if YOU want to listen to that crap, but quit nit-picking and griping about “unfairness”, no offense man, but it sound kinda hypocritical. Besides, now he’s got his new job on XM, so wat ev.

No. I do not listen to Howard Stern.

But that’s not the point. It doesn’t matter how nicely Oprah discusses it, the point is that she gets to talk about it free from fines by the FCC and Howard Stern does not.

I don’t know where you see me talking about “unfairness” – I never said that. I’m just saying that if the government is allowed to selectively decide who is “nice” and who isn’t “nice” then that is restricting free speech. Howard Stern has every right to be vulgar as he wants because this is American and some people like that. If they don’t like it, they can turn the channel.

Since I don’t listen to Stern, my concern is this… if Stern is censored and fined on public airwaves because somebody doesn’t think he is “nice” enough when he discusses rim jobs and oral sex, how long will it be before a show I DO LIKE and DO LISTEN TO is censored and fined? It is a slippery slope. Today it’s Stern, tomorrow it’s Veronica Mars. And that’s not right.

Anyway, Stern isn’t on XM, he’s on Sirius. And there is already talk of him being censored even there.

i completely understand where you are going with this, and i agree with can agree with you, the american government is able to do whatever it wants against the american people, and even if nobody likes howard stern, that doesnt mean the the FCC is allowed to take him off of the air.

PS: women will always take oprahs side in any situation, and i have had several arguments over her myself with family, best not to use her as a steping stone in arguements…
